Fungaia between Prosecco Hills and Castle History

Fungaia between the Route and the Hills

Fungaia is part of the third section of the “Vittorio Veneto–Treviso through the Prosecco Hills” route. This section is 56 km long, passes through Susegana, and goes by Castello di San Salvatore. This brings the route, the landscape around Susegana, and a historic building together in one travel itinerary.

In the municipality of Susegana, the Piave River marks the boundary between the hills and the plain. This clear landscape feature helps you view the area not only as a wine-growing region, but also as a place with a clearly recognisable change in terrain. This creates a varied impression of the area, especially when planning an individual trip.

Walking through the Landscape

The “Sul «cammino» dei castelli” footpath in the municipality of Susegana is 7.2 km long.

The route begins at Piazzetta ex Scuole in Collalto or at Chiesa dell’Annunziata in Susegana.

Castello di San Salvatore and Its History

In the municipality of Susegana, Castello di San Salvatore was built for the Collalto family in the second half of the 13th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, it served as a defensive fortress. Its medieval function gives the building a historical depth that extends beyond its present-day appearance.

Later, Castello di San Salvatore became a luxurious aristocratic residence and an artistic centre for the region and at the European level. Following its restoration, it serves as an elegant venue for events and functions.

Wine, Cellars and Rural Heritage

Several experiences lead into the wine landscape at the foot of Castello di San Salvatore. The guided “Hiking among the castle vines” tour passes through vineyards, a winery, and a barrel cellar. An off-road wine experience explores the vineyards there in a vintage off-road vehicle.

Guided tours and tastings are also offered around Castello di San Salvatore. They explain the company’s production method and sustainable approach. At Cantine Conte Collalto, the tours include the historic winery dating from the early 20th century and the vineyards.

Casa Vigneti is also part of the cultural landscape of the municipality of Susegana. The old farmhouse is an authentic testimony to rural life in the region at the beginning of the 20th century. Together with the medieval castle, the vineyards, and the Piave River, it shows an area where history, landscape, and farming traditions exist closely side by side.

For your travel planning, these highlights can be given different emphasis: the 7.2 km footpath focuses on walking and castles, the third route section connects Susegana with the Prosecco Hills, while Castello di San Salvatore, Cantine Conte Collalto, and Casa Vigneti offer different ways to experience history and wine.
