Orsago Between Architectural History and Spring Landscape

Orsago reveals several clearly distinct sides: sacred history at the parish church of San Benedetto Abate, aristocratic architectural history at historic villas, and landscape and archaeology at Andar par rivai and Palù. This gives you a selection of different things to observe – from dates and architectural details to paths, water and habitats.

Church and Traces of Early History

The parish church of San Benedetto Abate in Orsago was dedicated to Saint Benedict the Abbot on the first Sunday in September 1695. Another historical reference is found in the Palù area near Orsago: flint tools used for hunting were discovered there, including arrowheads, scrapers for working hides and blades for cutting. Primitive pottery objects were also found. The finds date from the final phases of the Neolithic, that is, from the period between 4000 and 3000 BC.

The tomb aedicule of the Terentii also points to the history of the area. It was discovered in 1949 while ploughing in the locality of Prà della Stalla and is now on display at the Museo di Treviso. In Orsago, therefore, you encounter not only visible buildings but also evidence whose current exhibition location lies outside the area where it was found.

Villas with Visible Details

Villa Sbrojavacca-Zanin dates from the 17th century and was built by the aristocratic Sbrojavacca family. At the rear there is a large park and a loggia with groin vaults; mascarons can be seen in the round arches. The inhabited villa can only be viewed from the outside. The focus is therefore on its exterior appearance and the architectural details visible from public areas.

Villa Priuli-Chastonnay-Da Re was built at the end of the 17th century by the Venetian aristocratic family of Ninfa Priuli. The year 1689 is engraved in the floor beneath the entrance portico. Villa Licini was built in 1879 by the family of the same name and is located on Via Mazzini, where you can discover it while out walking.

Andar par rivai: Paths, Hedges and Water

The equipped area of Andar par rivai can be reached via the blue trail or the path called Andar par rivai. The landscape at Andar par rivai is typical of the Po Valley, with agricultural land bordered by medium-height hedges. Andar par rivai contains three habitat types: mesophilic tree hedges, a spring-fed stream and various cultivated areas.

The spring-fed stream has a predominantly sandy bed. Aquatic plants, sticklebacks and frogs can be found there. There is currently a wooden tower in the Risorgive area, serving as an observation tower. Those who like to plan their time outdoors around specific landscape features will therefore find various points of interest here: paths, hedges, water, agricultural land and an elevated observation point.

Library and Your Own Daily Planning

The municipal library of Orsago is a public reading facility and has a catalogued book collection. If you structure your stay around your interests, you can combine architectural details, archaeological traces, paths through different habitats and the observation tower. This allows you to explore Orsago individually between culture, nature and close observation of the area.
