Susegana combines sacred art, castles and paths through vineyards. You can explore the area through specific cultural sites, a car-free walking path and a 12.8-kilometre Passeggiata. This combination particularly appeals to travellers who want to experience historic places together with physical activity and regional culinary culture.

Churches, Castles and Venetian Art

San Daniele della Vigna is considered Susegana’s first parish church and was built on Colle di San Daniele. A fragment of a Madonna and Child by Mattia de la Barovera, dated 1480, survives from its original decoration.

From 1461, Castello di Collalto housed a Franciscan monastery. Today, little remains of the complex and its walls. It is precisely this contrast between surviving traces and the site’s former status that shapes the view of Collalto.

On the Collalto hill overlooking the Piave, the construction of an initial fortified centre is dated to 1110; however, this date is not securely documented. The Castello di San Salvatore complex includes an 18th-century Venetian-style palace with works by important Venetian masters.

The cultural arc therefore extends from sacred painting through a former monastery and surviving wall remains to Venetian architecture and visual art.

Walks through Vineyards and Forests

The “Sul cammino dei castelli” footpath passes Castello di Collalto and Castello di S. Salvatore. The walk leads through a green, car-free landscape.

The Passeggiata dei Collalto leads from Castello di Collalto through meadows, vineyards and forests to Castello di San Salvatore in Susegana. It is 12.8 kilometres long, and you should allow four hours of walking time for the route. The starting point is the car park on Via Strada di Collalto next to Collalto’s primary schools. A separate time slot between Collalto and San Salvatore makes sense for this route.

Festivals and Tastings

The “Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio in Collalto” takes place during the last ten days of April and includes dance evenings, cultural evenings and gastronomic events. Spiedo is the main dish at this festival. For a spring trip, this creates a specific period combined with several types of events.

“Hiking tra le vigne del Castello” offers a travelling tasting experience between nature and history at the foot of Castello di San Salvatore.

Planned Walks to First World War Sites

Two trenches and an observation post in a cave have been cleared on Colle della Tombola. Walks to First World War sites located on the private property of the Collalto family are planned.
