Alberoni on the Lido: Nature, Routes and History

Alberoni on the Lido combines a clearly defined natural landscape with beaches, routes and historically shaped locations. The Alberoni nature reserve is part of the Natura 2000 site IT 3250023 “Lido di Venezia: biotopi litoranei”, which is designated both as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and as a Special Protection Area (SPA). The Kentish plover breeds on Alberoni Beach, known in Italian as fratino. Those interested in coastal landscapes and birdwatching will find a specific reason to get to know Alberoni more closely.

The WWF Oasis Dune degli Alberoni can be visited freely all year round. In addition, the oasis offers themed guided tours for groups and school classes by prior reservation.

Getting to Alberoni

Alberoni can be reached from the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage on the Lido by bus routes A or B. Alternatively, route 11 goes directly to Pellestrina. The WWF Oasis Dune degli Alberoni can also be reached from Venice by taking ACTV waterbus routes 1, 51 and 61 to the Lido, Santa Maria Elisabetta, and then bus route A to Alberoni. For planning purposes, the connection between the waterbus, the Lido and the local bus routes is therefore particularly relevant. Those travelling from Venice should plan the change at the Lido between the waterbus and the bus as a separate part of the journey to Alberoni; Santa Maria Elisabetta is the transfer point for this.

By bicycle and on foot

A recommended cycling tour on the Lido leads from the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage to Alberoni. In addition, the cycle and footpath along the Murazzi ends at Alberoni Beach. These two routes appeal to visitors who want to view Alberoni not merely as an individual beach location, but also wish to include the journey across the Lido in their day plans. Those exploring the Lido by bicycle can plan Alberoni as the endpoint of this route; along the Murazzi, by contrast, the beach is the destination.

Golf history on the southern Lido

The first nine holes of the Circolo Golf Venezia were planned in Alberoni in 1928. In 1951, the Circolo Golf Venezia was expanded to 18 holes. A 100-hectare site was also selected for the Circolo Golf Venezia in Alberoni, at the southern end of the Lido next to the entrance to the Malamocco harbour. The dates and the location on the southern Lido give the place a historical connection to the development of this golf project.

Lighthouse and film history

The Faro Alberoni is also known as Faro Rocchetta and is visible from the Adriatic Sea. Another cultural connection exists with the Bagni Alberoni: they served as a filming location for the exterior shots of Luchino Visconti’s film “Death in Venice”.
