Altino: Archaeology, Lagoon Landscape and Paths of Remembrance

Altino draws attention to the history of an ancient settlement and to a water landscape shaped by changing river courses and lagoon channels. The ancient coastal landscape of Roman Altino thus provides the setting for a journey in which historical traces and the landscape stand closely side by side.

Archaeology at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Altino

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Altino displays more than 40,000 objects. It preserves remains of the prehistoric, Venetic and Roman settlement of the area and houses Roman and pre-Roman finds. These include Paleo-Venetic grave goods, funerary monuments, mosaics and household objects. The museum conveys the everyday life of Altinum's ancient inhabitants and makes the development of the settlement comprehensible through different groups of finds.

City Entrance, Residential Quarter and Necropolis

A monumental gate landing place in Altinum marked the northern entrance to the city from the 1st century BC onward. In one of the archaeological areas, a small part of a residential quarter is visible; it was created at the beginning of the 1st century AD as an urban expansion. The Domus della Pantera is characterized by a black-and-white atrium mosaic depicting an animal drinking.

The Via Annia ran through Altinum along the route between Adria and Aquileia. Altino was one of the most important ports of the northern Adriatic. The western necropolis of Altino dates from the Augustan period and included monumental mausoleums, aediculae decorated with marble statues, and large circular buildings. In the 7th century, the inhabitants of Altino finally moved to the island of Torcello, thereby creating the conditions for the emergence of Venice.

Archaeological Areas and Seasonal Planning

The Parco archeologico di Altino comprises two archaeological areas located about 500 metres from the museum. A visit to the archaeological site is planned for the period from April to October; it cannot be visited in bad weather. If you are planning to visit the excavation areas, this seasonal and weather-dependent restriction is one of the important points to bear in mind.

Cycle Path along the River Zero

The Percorso della Memoria runs as a cycle path along the Via Claudia Augusta from Quarto to Altino, following the embankment of the River Zero. It serves to enhance the cultural, religious and historical sites included in the route. For cycle travellers, this path complements the archaeological perspective with a route through the surrounding landscape.

Getting There and Parking Options

The Museo Nazionale e area archeologica di Altino can be reached on ATVO line 25A on the San Donà–Mestre–Venezia route. In Altino, there is a free outdoor car park with approximately 10 spaces, including a disabled parking space, additional spaces along the road, and a larger free car park 200 metres away. Depending on how you travel, you can therefore consider a bus connection or several free parking options.
