The Museo Civico della Laguna Sud San Francesco Fuori le Mura houses an extensive collection of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts connected with lagoon culture. Across three floors, the Museo Civico della Laguna Sud presents the history of Chioggia from pre-Roman times to the present day.
The Museo di Zoologia Adriatica is housed in Palazzo Grassi, a historic 18th-century building, and preserves numerous species of marine organisms. Historical Traces in the Cityscape
The Museo dell'Orologio presents a medieval clock, information about astronomy and an astrolabe. It is housed in the thousand-year-old bell tower of Sant’Andrea. The Porta di Santa Maria, dating from 1530, was formerly the only access route to Chioggia from the mainland.
Fish Market and Cuisine
Chioggia’s fish market is described as one of the city’s oldest institutions. Fruit and vegetables are grown in Chioggia; the type of soil and the influence of the sea give the crops an intense, full and distinctive flavour. At the Sagra del Pesce, which has been held for more than 80 years, you can try traditional dishes such as Sarde in Saore, Peoci in Cassopipa and mixed fish with Schie, as well as various fish dishes.
Working on and under the Water
At the Ittiturismo and Pescaturismo in Chioggia, visitors can take part in the work of the fishermen. Together with local sailors, you can also learn how to handle ropes and buoys. The Tegnùe are natural reefs that provide a habitat for diverse marine fauna, including numerous species of fish, invertebrates, echinoderms, molluscs and crustaceans.
Particularly interesting diving sites with safe moorings and easily accessible underwater routes for recreational diving have been established at the Tegnùe. Chioggia also has a circular route of around 7 km, with several information points about the flora and fauna of this lagoon area.
