Oppeano: Churches, Ancient Traces and Rural History

In the lower Veronese plain, Oppeano is one of the centres associated with the culture of the “ancient Veneti” between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. Its historical heritage ranges from sacred architecture and archaeological traces to the history of rural farms.

Sacred Architectural Heritage and Art

The present-day Chiesa di Oppeano was built in 1841 over an earlier church dating from the 11th century. The Chiesa di Mazzantica dates from the 14th century; by 1526 at the latest, it was a parish church. Inside, there is an attractive roof-beam structure, several valuable frescoes and the altarpiece depicting the Birth of Mary by Brusasorzi.

The history of the Ex Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli dates back to 1526. Its redesign was intended to combine the preservation of the original building structures with public use of the spaces. Today, the former church houses a municipal auditorium named after Don Remo Castegini.

Following its most recent restoration, the Chiesa di Vallese combines older and modern elements into a harmonious overall appearance as a sacred building. It thus broadens Oppeano’s ecclesiastical history perspective through the deliberate integration of different construction phases.

Ancient Traces and Historic Sites

Today, only the 17th-century manor house and the chapel with its richly decorated Baroque façade remain of the Corte Domenicale Turco in the piazza. The chapel is considered a rare example of this style in the lower plains. The Castrum Euppedanum originated in the early Middle Ages as a fortified camp. West of Oppeano’s present-day square stands a mutilated, barely recognisable tower, regarded as a surviving remnant of the Castrum Euppedanum.

The Torre di Ezzelino dates from the 13th century. Villa Carli alla Montara dates from the period between the 17th and 18th centuries. Le Franchine is a burial site in Oppeano dating from the period between the 9th and 4th centuries BC. Those interested in archaeology and architecture will therefore find several historical points of interest in Oppeano.

Rural Tradition and Natural Landscapes

Oppeano is associated with a tradition of rural farms that developed in the 15th and 16th centuries around self-sufficient residential units with dovecotes and substantial surrounding walls.

Within the municipality of Oppeano lies a large Site of Community Importance (SIC), extending through the “valley” of Ca’ degli Oppi on the edge of the “Sguazzo” of Vallese. Archaeological finds and spring outflows shape this area. Ca’ degli Oppi is also home to the Teatro Salus, a parish theatre with a hall accommodating up to 200 spectators. Comedies and works in dialect were performed there.
