Sanguinetto – Sacred Art, Castle History and Rofioi

Sanguinetto combines sacred art, medieval architectural history, a completely flat landscape and its own culinary tradition. You can get to know the town through its churches, castle, Oratorio delle Tre Vie and Rofioi. Sacred Art and a Long Church History

The parish church of San Giorgio Martire was completed in 1835 based on a design by the Verona-born architect Giovanni Canella. Inside, the painter Gaetano Miolato created 14 Stations of the Cross scenes, as well as scenes of the Last Supper, the multiplication of the loaves and the martyrdom of Saint George. Today’s parish church of Santa Maria Regina in Venera was completed in 1959 and consecrated in 2001. Its origins stand alongside a significantly older ecclesiastical trace: Sanguinetto’s first church was established in 1145 as a chapel dependent on Casaleone. The town’s religious heritage therefore extends from a medieval chapel to a 20th-century church.

Oratorio and Castle

The Oratorio delle Tre Vie had already been completed by 1747. It has a niche containing an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 17th century, flanked by Saint Francis of Assisi and another saint. The oratorio is used especially for Marian devotion, including the Rosary in May and the celebration of the “11 Masses” on a single day in July. The combination of building, image and religious practice offers culturally interested visitors an illustrative insight into traditions of sacred images and religious celebrations.

Sanguinetto Castle was built in the 14th century on behalf of the Scaligeri. It is a square complex with sides measuring approximately 55 metres and is located in the heart of the town.

Rofioi and the Po Valley Landscape

A distinctive culinary highlight is the Antica Sagra dei Rofioi. It normally takes place on the second Sunday in September and includes food stalls, dance evenings, as well as tastings and sales of traditional Rofioi. These are puff pastries originating from Sanguinetto, filled with almonds, amaretti, rum and biscuits.
