Soave combines a striking fortress complex with churches from several centuries and a strong wine tradition. Those who choose the town as a travel destination will find historical themes, guided tours, as well as paths through the countryside and along the Strada del Vino Soave.

Castello di Soave and Medieval History

Castello di Soave is a medieval military complex with a central keep, three courtyards and a small hanging courtyard. Its fortified origins probably date back to the beginning of the 10th century.

Cansignorio restored Castello di Soave in 1369. In 1375, he strengthened it by building the large ring wall around the town. Guided tours are available by prior reservation for a more in-depth visit to this structure.

Churches and Cultural Sites

The religious buildings also span different eras. The Chiesa di San Giorgio dates from the second half of the 12th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monte Santo dei Padri Domenicani was built in the second half of the 15th century; during its restoration, frescoes dated 1474, 1492 and 1502 were uncovered.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Monte Santo dei Padri Domenicani is no longer used for worship today. Instead, it hosts cultural and artistic events. In Soave, historic church interiors therefore meet a cultural offering that extends beyond their original religious purpose.

Walking and Cycling Routes

Castello di Soave can be reached on foot from the town centre via Via Castello Scaligero, which begins at Piazza dell’Antenna.

“Il borgo di Soave tra storia e paesaggi” begins and ends in Soave. “Il Giro dei Capitelli e la Strada del Vino” also begins in Soave and ends beyond Castello di Soave.

Wine, Regional Cuisine and Local Tradition

The approximately 50-kilometre-long Strada del Vino Soave leads to wineries where visitors can taste wine and sample typical local dishes. It also offers routes on foot, by car or by bicycle, as well as culinary tours with guided visits and tastings in wine cellars. This makes it possible to combine Soave with wine and food culture as well as with different ways of exploring the surrounding area.

A special connection between wine and the town’s history is showcased by the Festa dell’Uva di Soave. It was established in 1929 on the initiative of Dr Zannini, the then president of the Cantina Sociale di Soave. At the Festa dell’Uva di Soave, visitors can taste Soave wine in the medieval town centre on the third weekend of the month and immerse themselves in the aromas and flavours of the local tradition.
