San Vito di Leguzzano: Churches, Woodcraft and Nature Trails

San Vito di Leguzzano combines a documented wood-processing tradition with churches and trails through a varied landscape. The Museo Etnografico sulla Lavorazione del Legno documents San Vito di Leguzzano’s wood-processing tradition with a collection of more than 4,000 objects.

Wood processing and historic churches

The ethnographic museum is housed in the former stables, barns and cellars of the 15th-century building complex belonging to the former Villa Priorato-Gandin complex. Another highlight is the parish church of Saints Vito, Modesto and Crescenzia, which is designated as a protected historic building. Inside, it preserves works by Giovanni Battista Maganza from the 16th century as well as paintings by Francesco Maffei from the 17th century.

The bell tower of this parish church also shapes the town’s historic appearance: it is the only octagonal bell tower in the Diocese of Vicenza, stands 64 metres high and was built between 1895 and 1902 according to a design by Vittorio Barichella. The church of San Valentino di Leguzzano was built between 1570 and 1578 at a place referred to as “mons Luguzani”. Its stone high altar was created in 1579 by the local sculptor Bartolomeo Mercante. The Church of the Immaculate Conception, also known as Chiesa di Sotto, preserves a rare fresco.

A 20th-century building wing and the brick chimney of the former Fabris–Pozzani–Tonin silk spinning mill are designated as evidence of the area’s industrial history. The Compagnia dei Battuti was a lay brotherhood in the Middle Ages.

Landscape and trails around San Vito

The landscape includes the Torrenti Refosco and Livergon, which run from north to south and together form the Torrente Giara. To the east are the Fossato Proe and the Torrente Leogra; there are also the smaller valleys of Valle Pra Longhi, Valle dell’Orco, Valle Bisele, Valle Nogara, Valle della Volpe and Valle della Guizza.

Two marked trails are central for walks and hikes. The Sentiero Natura 1 – Percorso Rosso connects old rural hamlets, deciduous forests and higher-elevation meadows with views over the plain of Vicenza and the Pasubio Group. Red markings and signposts make the trail fully signposted; it can be walked in both directions. The Sentiero Natura 2 – Percorso Verde follows marked paths through forests, past small streams, across hilly meadows and through rural hamlets with stone houses, dry-stone walls and old farm tracks. It begins at the war memorial at the intersection of Via Chiesa and Via Sant’Antonio, where wooden trail markers point the way.
