Castiglione Messer Raimondo: Churches, Temple Traces and Gran Sasso Views

Between the Fino Valley and Gran Sasso

Castiglione Messer Raimondo combines the character of a medieval hilltop village with remarkable religious and archaeological traces. The town lies in the valley of the Fino River. From Colle San Giorgio, the view extends to the peaks of Gran Sasso and as far as the coast of the Province of Teramo. San Donato in the Historic Centre

The parish church of San Donato has a Latin-cross floor plan, Baroque furnishings and eight altars. San Donato Martire is located in the historic centre of Castiglione Messer Raimondo and extends across two independent levels, including a small lower chapel. The present-day church of San Donato Martire is accessed via a monumental scissor staircase. Its tripartite façade consists of stone and brick masonry.

The details inside also deserve close attention. The chapel of San Donato Martire, located beside the presbytery, is richly decorated with gilded and marble-effect elements. The parish church of San Donato also preserves the mortal remains of the saint. In addition, there is a processional cross from the 15th century, made of silver foil as well as enamelled and gilded copper.

Ancient Traces at Colle San Giorgio

The Chiesa di Santa Maria was built on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Diana. The remains of an Italic temple were uncovered on Colle San Giorgio. Fragments of statues and extensive terracotta remains were found there in connection with a pre-Roman Italic temple. The remains of the ancient sanctuary at Colle San Giorgio are now interwoven with the structure of the medieval church of S. Maria ad Luquianum.

San Pietro Apostolo in Appignano

The Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo is located in the historic centre of the Appignano district. Its simple yet monumental late-Romanesque exterior is characterised by thick stone walls. A 16th-century stone portal is set into the side façade, with a coat of arms mounted on the architrave. The interior features an 18th-century Baroque design and is richly decorated with stucco, statues, gilding and paintings.

The architectural development also includes a later upper brick level added to the Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo. It reflects the formal characteristics of the Atrian School, shaped in the 15th century. Those interested in church architecture, regional design and the combination of different periods will therefore find several clearly distinct points of interest in Castiglione Messer Raimondo.
