Silvi: Adriatic Coast between Nature, Culture and Sea Experiences

Silvi combines a predominantly sandy coastline with protected marine areas, historic places and long-standing cultural traditions. The coast of Silvi Marina has neither breakwaters nor cliffs. When choosing your accommodation, the different aspects of the town can serve as a guide: coastal scenery and water experiences shape Silvi just as much as the historic alleyways, churches and events in Silvi Paese.

Coast and Marine Reserve

The Torre del Cerrano Marine Reserve extends for seven kilometres of coastline between the municipalities of Pineto and Silvi. It includes sandy Adriatic seabeds and areas with underwater reefs. The Kentish plover, a rare migratory bird species that nests on the beach, lives in the marine reserve. For nature enthusiasts, this coastal area therefore combines seascapes with wildlife observation.

Cycle Path and Water Sports

A 30-kilometre cycle path begins in Silvi and runs through the marine reserve from Pineto to Roseto. In Silvi Marina, you can go snorkelling in the Parco Marino del Cerrano; Silvi also offers outdoor activities such as surfing and kitesurfing. The Torre di Cerrano stands between Silvi and Pineto on the Adriatic coast and is one of the old coastal towers of the Kingdom of Naples.

Silvi Paese and Religious Sites

Silvi Paese is a labyrinth of narrow cobbled alleyways, archways and hidden courtyards. The Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore is the oldest church in Silvi. The Cappella della Madonna dello Splendore stands on the panoramic road leading from Silvi’s historic centre to the coast. It was built around the 1930s to a design by Marchese Giuseppe De Torres and is an important place of worship and devotion for the local community of Silvi as well as for visitors to the town.

Ferragosto between Procession and Sea

Silvi’s religious and festive character includes the Ferragosto sea procession: every 15 August, the statue of the Madonna is carried along the coast; this tradition has existed since 1975. The procession is followed by an open-air mass in Piazza dei Pini. The Ferragosto celebrations also include a traditional midnight fireworks display on the beach and over the sea on 15 August.

Crafts, History and Flavour

SAILA began in 1937 at the historic Kursaal Theatre in Silvi Marina, which was converted into a factory for processing and purchasing liquorice. At „Arti e mestieri“ in Silvi Paese, numerous craftspeople make old and modern objects by hand, creating a typical atmosphere reminiscent of medieval workshops. The event lasts from the first Friday after mid-July until the following Tuesday. Brodetto di Pesce, Silvi’s typical dish, is part of the local character: a mixed fish soup.

Getting Around

Silvi Marina can be reached via the Sentiero dello Splendore in around 30 minutes; the path is somewhat steep. The Pineta di Silvi Marina comprises stone pines, holm oaks and oaks, as well as other tree species typical of the Mediterranean region.
