Discover Bitetto: Cathedral, Monastery and Via Peuceta
Bitetto between architectural history and the Via Peuceta
If you would like to combine Italian architecture, religious history and regional landscapes on one trip, Bitetto offers several clear points of interest. The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo, Santa Maria la Veterana, the Santuario del Beato Giacomo and the Museo della Devozione e del Lavoro explore different historical and cultural themes. This picture is complemented by the second stage of the Via Peuceta, which leads from Bitetto to Cassano delle Murge, as well as by local shops and olive mills offering tastings and typical products.
Cathedral, city gate and fortified residence
The Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo has a basilica plan in the shape of a Latin cross. The transept projects beyond the long sides, while the apses are set back. Its portals express the French Gothic style, which reached Apulia through the presence of the Angevins. The Romanesque cathedral was modernised by Lillo da Barletta in 1335 on the orders of Bishop Giacomo Bonocore.
Santa Maria la Veterana is the surviving part of a significant fortified early medieval casale. The complex was rebuilt between 1294 and 1302 over an earlier place of worship, mentioned in a document from February 959. Santa Maria la Veterana served as a Marian sanctuary and was a place of particular popular devotion, attracting residents of Bitetto and people from neighbouring communities. The Porta Baresana (Porta Piscina) is part of the surviving medieval walls and the most important city gate of Bitetto. The Palazzo Baronale Noya is a fortified residence immediately outside the walls next to this gate; its courtyard façade is late Baroque and recalls Vanvitellian motifs.
Monastery, sanctuary and museum
The Santuario del Beato Giacomo is dedicated to Blessed Giacomo Varingez (Illirico). He died in Bitetto in 1496 and is buried there. The Franciscan monastery at the Santuario was founded in 1432 and includes a cloister and a park. The Santuario also includes a 17th-century church with a gilded wooden altar by Fra Giuseppe da Soleto.
The Museo della Devozione e del Lavoro uses the original kitchens and cells of the old monastery and has collected testimonies of popular devotion and local working and farming traditions there since 1985. It displays these testimonies, a permanent nativity scene depicting motifs from Bitetto’s old town, sacred furnishings, votive offerings and memorabilia associated with Blessed Giacomo. The museum documents traditional crafts, including workshops belonging to saddlers, potters and basket makers. Once a year, its rooms are used to stage a living nativity scene.
Landscape along the Via Peuceta
The second stage of the Via Peuceta leads from Bitetto to Cassano delle Murge. About 1 km after setting out from Bitetto, the stage enters a lush olive grove. It also passes through broad plains with olive groves, almond orchards and vineyards, among which lie old masserie, trulli and dry-stone walls.
