History at the Castello Normanno Svevo

The Castello Normanno Svevo originated in Byzantine times. It acquired the form still visible today under Riccardo Siniscalco d’Altavilla in the 12th century and under Frederick II after his return from the Crusade of 1228–1229. Of the original structure, which consisted of four towers, two towers remain: the Norman keep de’ Rossi and the Torre Imperatrice.

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale is located inside the castle. It displays finds from the archaeological area of Monte Sannace dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. This means that Gioia del Colle’s historical sweep extends far beyond its medieval architectural history. The Parco Archeologico di Monte Sannace in the vicinity of Gioia del Colle is considered the largest known Peucetian settlement.

The wine also bears the name of the place: the “Gioia del Colle” Primitivo DOP wine must be made exclusively from Primitivo grapes.
