History at the Historic Center

The Castello Acquaviva d’Aragona rises at the upper edge of Conversano’s historic center. Built on the remains of the megalithic walls of the ancient Peucetian settlement of Norba, dating from the 6th to the 4th century BC, the castle stands at an elevation of 220 meters. If you appreciate historical connections, you will encounter two clearly distinct eras in one place: the history of the ancient city and the Castello later built above it.

The Castello Acquaviva d’Aragona also houses the Pinacoteca Comunale. It includes 17th-century paintings from Paolo Finoglio’s cycle La Gerusalemme Liberata. This also makes the castle interesting for a stay in which architecture and painting stand side by side on an equal footing.

MUSeCO – Musei in Conversano is spread across the Castello Acquaviva d’Aragona and the former Monastero di San Benedetto. The Monastero di S. Benedetto preserves a medieval cloister dating from the 11th to the 13th century. Its trapezoidal floor plan, carved capitals and mosaic decoration give the monastery complex a precise architectural profile.

The Museo Civico Archeologico displays archaeological evidence from the city of Conversano; its chronological scope extends from prehistory to late antiquity. Another prominent building is the Basilica Cattedrale Maria SS. Assunta. It is dedicated to Maria Santissima Assunta and San Flaviano and is an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

Karst Landscape and Ancient Sites

The Laghi di Conversano e Gravina di Monsignore Regional Nature Reserve is located in the Conversano area. The Gravina di Monsignore is a karst gorge that extends from the higher areas of the southeastern Murgia to the coast. It thus provides a landscape theme with its own geological character alongside Conversano’s stony cultural history.

The area around Conversano also contains several sites with ancient or subterranean characteristics. Castiglione and Sant’Apollinare are ancient sites near Conversano. The Grotte di Castellana and the Grotta del Trullo are caves in the same area. This gives you a selection ranging from visible historical traces to the forms of the karst landscape.
