Cellino San Marco combines its historic town center with a landscape of vineyards and olive groves extending across the slopes of the Murge Salentine. Regional products also feature prominently in the townscape and in the wine offerings.

Historic Town Center and Ecclesiastical Architectural History

Via Vittorio Emanuele II is the main street and vibrant center of Cellino San Marco’s historic old town. Palazzo Baronale stands on the main square, Largo Castello. Palazzo Baronale is also known as Castello and Palazzo Comitale. These two names refer to the same building at Largo Castello.

The Chiesa matrice di San Marco e Santa Caterina was built in 1738. It acquired its currently visible neoclassical appearance through a renovation in 1870, carried out according to a design by the architect and engineer Antonio Rubini. The furnishings include a magnificent Baroque altar. This church therefore brings together its earlier architectural history, the 19th-century renovation and the Baroque furnishings.

The Cappella di San Marco is located immediately outside the built-up area. It is currently inhabited and is known for having housed King Vittorio Emanuele III. Its location on the edge of town establishes a distinct spatial relationship alongside Cellino San Marco’s central streets and squares.

Festival Culture and Local Tradition

The Sagra Beddrha Cilinu is a local folk festival held annually. Traditionally, it is associated with the patron saint’s feast and originated as a religious celebration in the saint’s honor. Thus, its religious origins remain a firmly established part of the local festival tradition, without the Sagra being limited to a single building in the town center.

Wine, Tastings and Regional Products

During a guided tour of Masseria Li Veli, the history of the estate and the surrounding vineyards are presented. The wine-making process from harvesting to marketing is also explained, including vinification, aging and bottling. The tour therefore covers both the wine-growing environment and the individual processing steps. The experience ends with a tasting of selected current vintages.

Cantine Due Palme also offers guided tours of its winery and wines. These include tastings and pairings with typical local products. Typical gastronomic specialties and wine can be sampled along Via Vittorio Emanuele II. The regional connection is therefore evident both at the wineries and in the historic town center.
