From the Byzantine Period to Santa Maria Abbey

Santa Maria Abbey initially had a Byzantine phase followed by a Norman phase. In 1062, it was built by the Norman military leader Roberto il Guiscardo on the remains of a Byzantine monastery dedicated to Saint Euphemia. The earthquake of 1638 destroyed the abbey. During Norman-Staufen rule, Santa Maria was administered by Benedictines; during Angevin rule, it passed to the Knights of Malta. The settlement of Sant'Eufemia initially developed around the ruins of the abbey.

Terina and Archaeological Traces

In the area of Sant'Eufemia Vetere, material evidence of an ancient settlement dates back to around the middle of the 19th century. Systematic archaeological research, which began in 1997, confirmed the ancient settlement of Terina. The excavated area includes a residential district laid out along parallel axes in a regular urban grid. A hoard of jewellery found in Contrada Terravecchia in 1865 was later sold to the British Museum in London, where it is still kept today.

Defensive Architecture and Rural Building Forms

One of the most distinctive structures is the Bastione di Malta. Its compact base has a truncated-pyramid shape, above which rises a square upper tower. In the Lamezia area, the Bastione di Malta is considered the best-preserved structure of the architectural heritage. The renovation work carried out in Sant'Eufemia in the 1930s created a different accent, resulting in notable rural architecture.

The historic church gave its name to the parish of San Giovanni Battista in S. Eufemia Vetere and dates from 1759. When exploring Santa Eufemia Lamezia, it is therefore possible to distinguish Byzantine, Norman, modern and more recent architectural traces from one another.

A traditional patron saint’s festival in honour of Saint Francis of Paola is celebrated in Sant'Eufemia Lamezia.
