Senerchia opens up several gateways to a landscape where mountain trails, protected nature and historic sites are closely interconnected. The experiences range from the Sentiero Italia CAI stage and the Valle della Caccia WWF Oasis to churches, castle ruins and traditional festivals. This allows you to shape your stay around your preferred focus and combine experiences in nature with culture and local character.

Mountain trails and nature around Senerchia

For hiking enthusiasts, stage SI S08 of the Sentiero Italia CAI is a defining feature. It leads uphill from Senerchia along the steep eastern slopes of Monte Polveracchio and follows numerous hairpin bends to the saddle below the summit of Monte Boschetiello. The stage also leads to Monte Polveracchio, which rises to 1,790 metres. The Sentiero Grotta profunnata extends for more than 400 metres in planimetric terms and offers views of the Valle della Caccia on the flank of Monte Polveracchio.

The Valle della Caccia WWF Oasis is located 3 kilometres from the centre of Senerchia. Rare plants such as Erica terminalis and Acer lobelii shape its character. Within this oasis, the Grotta del Muschio opens up as a limestone cave in a rock face. Senerchia therefore places both the route of a mountain trail and special natural formations and botanical features at the heart of travel planning.

Historic sites and viewpoints

An important cultural site is the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, a Romanesque church built on a hill in the 12th century. From there, a large part of the Valle del Sele can be viewed. By a bishops' decree dated 6 September 2018, the church was elevated to the status of a diocesan shrine. This status is connected with the devotion to Saint Michael expressed by the local population over the course of centuries.

The oldest part of the Borgo Antico di Senerchia, which developed below the castle, became a ghost town after the earthquake of 23 November 1980. The Ruderi del Castello di Senerchia are also part of the area's historical heritage. The fortress, which already existed beforehand, was probably built and expanded between the 8th and 9th centuries AD by the Lombards and Normans, who successively ruled the fief.

Festivals, local traditions and orientation

La Sagra del Maiale originated in 1989 and is characterised as a traditional rural festival. Festa di Sant'Antuono is a festival held in January in honour of Saint Anthony the Abbot, during which fires known as carcara are lit. In front of Senerchia, on Via Vallone, stands the Cappella della Madonna delle Grazie in the largest man-made cavity in a rock. The rock is located next to a small car park and a fountain.

The focus of your trip may determine your choice of accommodation: those considering stage SI S08 and Monte Polveracchio will plan their stay differently from those who place the Valle della Caccia WWF Oasis, the Romanesque church or the historic ruins at the centre of their itinerary. For arrival, the nearest railway station to Senerchia is Contursi Terme on the Salerno–Contursi line; from there, daily connections to Salerno are available.
