Pietrastornina between rocky cliffs, forests and ceramic culture
Accommodation in Pietrastornina
Pietrastornina combines a fortified rocky cliff, a medieval historic centre and a heavily forested landscape. The municipal area lies within the PARCO REGIONALE DEL PARTENIO; around 50 percent of the municipal area is covered by forests. This makes it a destination where cultural history and highland landscapes exist in close proximity.
Forest landscapes and elevations above the town
The forests change in character with altitude: below 1,000 metres, chestnut coppice and mixed coppice forests predominate, while above 1,000 metres there are beech forests. The TORRENTE S. MARTINO flows through the centre of Pietrastornina. From the heights above the town, a 360-degree horizon opens up. The mountain road leads up to 1,170 metres to the locality of Acqua delle Vene and continues to the locality of Toppa Riviezzo at 1,470 metres.
Rocky cliff, castle and medieval historic centre
The original settlement gradually developed between the 10th and 11th centuries at the foot of the fortified rocky cliff. The Castello di Pietrastornina was built on the large pinnacle of rock above the medieval settlement. It is first mentioned in a deed of donation issued by the Lombard prince Arechi II in November 774. The Porta Urbana di Via Castello dates from the period when the medieval historic centre was established, which is generally dated to the 12th to 15th centuries.
The barrel vault of the Porta Urbana di Via Castello originally covered a 12-metre section of road. It was later extended by a further 2 metres on the southern side; the Porta measures 2.30 metres across. At the entrance portal of the Palazzo Baronale - Palazzo Campobasso, the coat of arms bears the engraved year 1614. The palazzo was probably built in the first decade of the 17th century at the behest of Ugone Pagano. His father Cesare Pagano, the first Baron of Pietrastornina, had acquired the property from the Verginian monks in 1587; Ugone inherited the fief in 1600.
Churches, memorial sites and ceramic culture
The first ecclesiastical foundation of the Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo between the Jardino and Mavilia farmsteads dates back to 20 February 1742. The new Chiesa della Madonna del Carmelo was built behind the site of the original chapel between 1856 and 1860. The Chiesa dei Sacri Cuori di Gesù e Maria was founded in 1919 and is located in the Furmo district. As a rectorate, it belongs to the parish of Maria Santissima Annunziata di Pietrastornina and has a regular rectangular floor plan, a single-nave interior and a pitched, tiled roof.
The Chiesa della SS. Annunziata di Pietrastornina was closed in 1979 for restoration and consolidation work and reopened for worship in 1992. Two bronze statues stand at the top of the stele of Il Monumento ai Caduti nella Grande Guerra: one represents victory, the other a soldier. The local cultural history also includes the ceramicist Donato Massa, who was born in Pietrastornina in 1677 as the son of Biagio Massa. The municipality’s virtual museum section offers a photographic catalogue, version 1.0, featuring works by artists from various editions of the Concorso Nazionale di Ceramica “Donato Massa”. The catalogue can be downloaded and viewed on a computer.
Local festivals and culinary traditions
At the Festa di San Biagio, a gastronomic tasting organised by the “La Vela” association was scheduled for 8:30 p.m. In Ciardelli Inferiore, a district of Pietrastornina in the Province of Avellino, a new edition of the Sagra dei Culurgiones was to take place on Saturday, 27 June 2026, from 8 p.m. in connection with the patronal celebrations for San Pietro Apostolo. The event is considered to have existed for more than 20 years and brings Sardinia and Irpinia together. In the weeks beforehand, more than 4,000 Culurgiones are prepared by hand in Ciardelli Inferiore, a district with around 50 inhabitants.
