Monteforte Irpino: Fortress History, Churches and the Partenio Landscape
Accommodation in Monteforte Irpino
Fortress history above the valley
Monteforte Irpino is located in the Parco del Partenio area. The ruins of Castello di Monteforte lie on the hill where the fortress once stood and overlook the valley below. This allows you to combine two focal points during your stay: the traces of the fortress on the hill and the landscape of the Partenio area.
The original fortification of Castello di Monteforte was built by the Lombards to control the plain of Nola and block the road in the event of a possible enemy invasion.
Churches and religious heritage
The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari contains an 18th-century organ and a large ceiling painting by Cacciapuoti depicting Saint Nicholas performing a miracle before three children. The Chiesa SS. Maria del Monte Carmelo is the seat of Monteforte’s very old Battenti tradition. This tradition can be traced back to a document from 1630. The ritual associated with the Battenti leads along Via Loffredo and Corso V. Emanuele to the Madonna del Carmine church.
Further sacred traces date back to different periods. The Chiesa di S.Michele Arcangelo contains vaulted catacomb areas from the Middle Ages; architectural traces there point to origins in the Byzantine or Lombard period. Beneath the Chiesa SS. Maria del Monte Carmelo, a crypt with a primitive stone altar and frescoes on the ceiling was uncovered. The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo is Monteforte’s oldest religious building and dates back to the 15th century. San Martino Vescovo and the organ in San Nicola belong to different centuries: the building dates from the 15th century, while the organ dates from the 18th century.
Trails for different day plans
Monteforte Irpino also offers various options for active excursions. The Sentiero panoramico sul Golfo di Napoli takes about five hours and is also suitable for mountain bikes and horseback riding. The approximate duration places the trail in your day planning as a separate block of time. Sentiero 216 leads from Castello di Monteforte through the Vallone dell’Olmo to Monte Faito and Monte Pizzone and is 5.5 kilometres long. This allows you to take different trail lengths and modes of transport into account when planning your day. Five hours provide a rough time frame; 5.5 kilometres indicate the distance of Sentiero 216.
A culinary perspective
“Fusilli montefortesi” is a type of handmade pasta. It is made by women in the numerous hamlets of the mountainous area in the Parco Regionale del Partenio. Alongside the fortress, churches and trails, this artisan-style pasta is therefore another tangible topic through which the character of Monteforte Irpino can be understood.
