Beatrice in Bonito: History, Art and Trails

Beatrice is anchored in Bonito’s municipal toponymy: there is a Contrada Beatrice there. The move of Lorenzo Beatrice from Fontanarosa to Morroni is part of the family tradition.

Historic Buildings and Sacred Art

In Bonito’s historic centre stands the Palazzo Pagella-Buongiorno, which dates from the 18th century. Bonito’s Torre Normanna was built together with the castle around 1130 on the orders of Guglielmo Gesualdo. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe in Bonito was first mentioned in 1517 as “Ecclesia S. Petri Hospitalis” or “Chiesa di San Pietro dell’Ospizio”. A hospice with five small rooms for pilgrims and the sick stood next to the church. The church also contains an 18th-century canvas painting depicting the Madonna del Carmine.

In the Cappella di Vincenzo Camuso, a chapel was established in the crypt of the former Chiesa dell’Oratorio, which was demolished after the 1962 earthquake. The chapel houses the mummy of a mysterious person who has been venerated by local residents for around two centuries. The Palazzo Pagella-Buongiorno houses numerous mementoes of the musician Crescenzo Buongiorno. The Chiesa ed ex Convento di S. Antonio di Bonito also contains a crucifix dating from 1799.

Museum, Street Art and Religious Tradition

The Museo della civiltà contadina, delle arti e dei mestieri in Bonito is a permanent exhibition focusing on peasant culture, art and craftsmanship. Since 2011, Bonito has featured street-art works honouring Salvatore Ferragamo. The idea of enhancing the town through publicly accessible urban art came from the cultural association Collettivo BOCA. A street-art tour is also available in Bonito.

The Congrega del Santissimo Rosario was officially founded in the Chiesa di San Domenico in Bonito on the first Sunday of October 1867. Religious celebrations in honour of the Madonna take place every year on 4 and 5 August at the Santuario Maria SS. della Neve. The sanctuary is accessible to wheelchair users.

Trails and Practical Information

The “Percorso Verde Madonna della Valle” runs through Bonito along a route of approximately 5 km, mostly unpaved, with an elevation difference of around 200 m. Bonito can be reached via the Napoli–Canosa motorway (A16). At the Grottaminarda exit, follow the SP 271; Bonito is 9 km from the toll station.

The interior of the Cappella di Vincenzo Camuso can be visited by prior appointment with a contact person; the chapel is wheelchair accessible. A reservation for a date and time is required to visit the Museo della civiltà contadina, delle arti e dei mestieri.
