Acquavena: History, Springs and Trails on Monte Bulgheria

Acquavena combines a historic town center with a striking mountain landscape. The town lies at the foot of Monte Bulgheria, while the mountain is also part of the surrounding area. Numerous springs are associated with Acquavena: they probably gave the town its name, and to this day they provide important resources for the local community.

From the Settlement Core to the Historic Townscape

After the defeat of the Goths by the Greek generals Narses and Belisarius in 533, many Bulgarian soldiers settled in the valleys. These settlements gave rise to Acquavena as the first inhabited core. The town later developed around the ancient church of Santa Maria la Vena, which dates from the early 11th century and is also known as Potentissima.

The Traversata del Monte Bulgheria leads from Acquavena to Licusati. This route includes Monte Bulgheria, the Rifugio Tozzo del Moio, the village of Il Piano and the Santuario dell’Annunziata di Licusati. The trail climbs uphill through woodland and over stone steps; along the way, views open up towards Monte Cervati and Gelbison. For planning a day trip, both the ascent and the stony terrain should therefore be considered as specific features of the route. When planning your day, you should consequently take the ascent and terrain into account alongside the stops along the connection from Acquavena to Licusati.

Another walk around the town leads near Piazza della Potentissima. There, you will find panoramic views of the surrounding valley, benches and the Fontana del Borgo.

Cultural Events and Excursion Destinations

The archaeological site Area archeologica Roccagloriosa is located in the vicinity of Acquavena. The site adds another specific setting to the town’s historical context. A fixed date in the annual calendar is the Feast of Saint Martin, which takes place in Acquavena every year on November 11. If this date falls on a Saturday, the festival is celebrated on the following Saturday.
