Discover Scorzo: Churches, Historic Routes and Nature
Accommodation in Scorzo
Scorzo between Sacred Art and Ancient Routes
For a trip to Scorzo, sacred art, historic transport routes and the landscape can be viewed as three clear focal points. The Torre Campanaria di San Martino in Contrada Casale displays two fragments of an Augustan inscription depicting two women. Between Scorzo and Zuppino, Nares Lucanae is considered to have been a station on the ancient Via Popilia. The Nares offered travellers places to stop, such as inns and guesthouses; Cicero and Garibaldi are said to have stopped there.
Churches, Works of Art and Orientation on Site
The Chiesa di San Matteo e Santa Margherita houses a statue of Sant’Antonio da Padova. The church also preserves an oil painting on canvas depicting Santa Maria degli Angeli and has an organ made in 1834 in Cava de’ Tirreni. The church is accessible through the main entrance on Via Nazionale in Scorzo; admission is free. A service is scheduled for Sundays at 11:30 a.m.
The Cappella di San Vito Martire dates from 1689 and was restored and blessed in 1902. No admission fee is charged to visit the Torre Campanaria di San Martino. Scorzo therefore brings together various sacred sites and individual works of art: a chapel with a recorded construction date, a bell tower with fragments of ancient inscriptions, and a church with a statue, painting and historic organ.
Pass, Nature Reserve and Historic Transport Routes
Near Scorzo, Nares Lucanae is considered a pass between the Monti Alburni and Serra Sant’Angelo. In the vicinity of Scorzo, the road from Corticelle in Località Difesa leads to the Foce Sele-Tanagro nature reserve. Its area includes numerous Sites of Community Importance as well as Special Protection Areas and serves to preserve biological diversity.
The route near Scorzo, approximately 12 kilometres long, remained in use during the Middle Ages under the name Via Regia. Later, the Bourbon road was built along this historic corridor. The Statale 19 delle Calabrie runs through Scorzo and follows the route of the Roman road for long stretches.
Hiking Trails through the Chestnut Groves
A hiking route leads from the Campo d’Amore area over the Valico della Strettina and down to Scorzo. The path to Scorzo is an old route used by local woodcutters to reach the Alburni plateau. Later sections of this route pass through dense chestnut groves before reaching Scorzo. For your planning, this creates a clear connection between the pass, forest and destination.
Village and Feast Days
A historic village is preserved in Contrada Arestusa in Scorzo. In Scorzo, Sant’Anna is associated with 26 July as the patronal feast day. The feast day in honour of San Vito in Scorzo was set for 15 June in 1908. These historical and religious connections complement the landscape of routes and churches with a seasonal aspect.
Choose Accommodation According to Your Travel Interests
When choosing accommodation for your stay, you can organise your days around your preferred focus. The Chiesa di San Matteo e Santa Margherita, the Cappella di San Vito Martire and the Torre Campanaria represent sacred spaces, paintings, a statue and an organ. The Via Regia, the Bourbon road and the Statale 19 lead into the history of the routes; the pass, nature reserve and chestnut groves add a landscape dimension. This allows you to plan according to your interests in culture, routes or nature.
