Camerota Between Coast and Cultural Heritage

Since 2009, the Area Marina Protetta Costa degli Infreschi e della Masseta has extended along the coast from Torre dello Zancale in Marina di Camerota to Scario in the Gulf of Policastro. It is a marine reserve in Campania. For planning your trip, this coastal area can be considered just as specifically as Camerota’s architectural and artistic monuments.

The coastal trail “On the western coast: walk of the four beaches” passes Torre dell’Isola, Spiaggia di Capo Grosso, Cala d’Arconte and the Porticello bathing cove.

Trails Between Fountains, Rocks and Sea

The Sentiero delle 12 Chiese begins at Piazza San Vito in Camerota and follows an old mule track to Tulo. Tulo is a traditional old fountain with washing areas and two springs. If you prefer trails with historical traces, this route combines a clearly defined starting point, an old mule track and a fountain with preserved water facilities.

The Belvedere Calanca viewpoint lies between Calanca Beach and the rocks of Macinelle. The mountain-bike route to Infreschi Bay offers a different landscape perspective: it leads into the protected Costa degli Infreschi area and includes a natural harbor. These two places and trails highlight different aspects within the coastal and natural setting.

Architecture and Art in Camerota

Castello di Camerota was classified as a cultural asset of cultural interest by a ministerial decree dated September 2, 1994. Palazzo Crocco is a monumental palace with a courtyard and two stone portals. The two buildings complement the landscape themes with architectural landmarks.

In the Chiesa di San Daniele Profeta, to the left of the presbytery, there is a painting from 1562 depicting the Madonna di Costantinopoli, probably by the Neapolitan artist Pietro Negroni. The Percorso della terracotta e degli antichi mestieri is a cultural trail in Camerota. The artwork and cultural trail offer different cultural points of connection for your stay.

Regional history can also be traced through specific dates. Around 1770, hand-operated methods for producing olive oil were used in the oil mills of the Camerota area; toward the end of the 18th century, animal-powered and water-powered types of oil mills were added. Torre dell’Isola was already in operation in 1599. In the chapel of the Grotta di San Biagio, a Mass is celebrated on February 3 as part of the festivities for Saint Blaise. Crafts, historic buildings and a religious celebration thus provide further cultural points of connection.

When choosing a hotel in Camerota, you can focus your trip on coastal landscapes, trails, nature, architecture, art or the region’s craft history. This range appeals to different travel interests and allows you to connect your accommodation choice with a personal travel idea without reducing Camerota to just one aspect.
