The Santuario della Madonna della Stella

The Santuario della Madonna della Stella is located on the summit of Monte Stella. It is a building of Basilian origin dating from around the year 1000 and was restored in 1993. The sanctuary offers views of the Sele Plain, the Cilento coast, the Irno Valley, the Lattari Mountains, the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and Capri. For visitors interested in culture, this is where sacred history meets a far-reaching view across landscapes and coastal areas.

Churches and Local History

The Parrocchia San Nicola di Bari stands in the town. It was built around the 13th century and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the bishop of Myra and patron saint of the local community. Inside, there is a valuable 14th-century marble bas-relief depicting the Madonna della Stella. The Parrocchia San Nicola di Bari has no architectural barriers. Stella Cilento celebrates the patronal feast in honor of San Nicola di Bari on the second Sunday in August.

The Chiesa Parrocchiale San Giovanni Battista is also part of the history of the churches. It probably has medieval origins, has a single-nave layout and features a main altar dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Historical traces can also be found in Guarrazzano: The settlement emerged during the Lombard period around an originally Lombard castle, around which the first settlement center developed. On Monte Stella, the remains of the Guastaldo’s residence are still visible at the site known as Castelluccio.

Further Trails and Historical Evidence

The Palazzo Vassallo also leads into the town’s history. The historic building has an imposing stone portal and small towers and is known as the “Castello” of Stella Cilento because of its strategic location. Traditional craftsmanship can still be admired in Droro today. The Anello di Cuntarià is a botanical and historical circular hiking trail. It begins and ends in Stella Cilento and passes through San Giovanni, Amalafede and Guarrazzano. You should allow five hours of walking time for this circular trail.
