River Landscape and Regional Specialty

The Sarno River runs through San Marzano sul Sarno and gives the town a clear connection to the surrounding landscape. The name of the regional park explicitly refers to the river and preserves this connection to the landscape in its designation. The river is not an abstract landscape theme, but is directly part of San Marzano sul Sarno’s geographical identity.

The Pomodoro San Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino holds a special position in the area. The tomato has the protected designation of origin DOP. Its characteristics are described with unusual precision: it has an elongated, rectangular shape, is 60 to 80 millimetres long, watery and almost seedless. This keeps the regional specialty described in concrete terms without reducing San Marzano sul Sarno to a single product.

Churches, Art and a Long History

The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie was founded in 1513. The Chiesa del Confraternita del Rosario is located nearby. This church houses the Madonna del Rosario by the Campanian painter Giovanni Antonio d’Amato, dating from the 16th century. The two religious buildings thus connect the foundation date of 1513 with a specific work of art and a regional artistic personality whose origins are clearly identifiable.

The town’s older past is also present archaeologically. Numerous archaeological finds from the Iron Age, dating from the 9th to the 6th century BC, were discovered in San Marzano sul Sarno. The valley was inhabited by the Sarrasti at that time. The archaeological remains from this Iron Age include 162 graves.

The Sarno and Its Regional Park

The Parco Regionale del Fiume Sarno was established in 2003 to enhance the river course and the area’s historical, cultural, ecological and archaeological heritage. The park therefore represents a broad view of San Marzano sul Sarno: its natural environment, history, culture and archaeology come together as distinct perspectives. The park’s establishment in 2003 took place after the Iron Age finds and the founding of the church.

Festivals and Practical Information

On 3 February, the patron saint’s festival in honour of San Biagio is celebrated in San Marzano sul Sarno. Anyone who wishes to take part may do so. The festival is therefore a clear cultural reference point for the town and complements the enduring themes of churches, art, archaeology and the river landscape. The patron saint’s festival falls on 3 February, while the market schedule specifies 10 February 2026.

For getting around locally, a planned change to the weekly market is also relevant: from Tuesday, 10 February 2026, the weekly market was scheduled to move to Via Berlinguer, in front of the main entrance to the municipal park.
