Historic Casalbuono

The historic centre of Casalbuono preserves its medieval character. At the top of a hill stands the Castello Baronale, which is also known as the Palazzo Baronale. Around 1200, it became the residence of the Sanseverino family. On your tour through the town's history, its prominent location combines with a historical landmark reaching far back into the past.

The Chiesa dell'Addolorata was built in 1596 and has a single-nave layout. Inside are statues of Saint Joseph and the Madonna Addolorata. The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria delle Grazie is also located in the historic centre. The stone portal indicates 1528 as the probable year of construction. During a walk through the narrow streets, the Palazzo Romanelli is also one of the sights you should not miss.

The Sentiero Natura ed Ippovia runs along the Calore River. The entire route from Casalbuono to the sources of the Calore River runs through the regional protected area “Riserva Naturale Foce Sele-Tanàgro”. The Sentiero Natura ed Ippovia has rest areas, viewpoints and picnic areas. It is designed as a path for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as a riding trail. The designation “ecotype” refers to a regionally distinctive bean variety, not to an additional product category.

In traditional cultivation in Casalbuono, these bean ecotypes are grown together with maize. The maize stalks serve as supports for the legumes. Casalbuono also hosts an annual festival in honour of the Fagiolo di Casalbuono, giving this speciality a permanent place in local cultural life throughout the year.
