Corbara: Borgo Sala, Casa Rossa and Corbarino

Corbara combines a medieval historic center with sacred architecture, a historic ruin, a hiking trail, and the tradition of the Corbarino tomato. This picture is complemented by religious and culinary festivals. Historic Center and Sacred Architecture

Borgo Sala is the medieval historic center of Corbara. The densely built ensemble of houses is connected by alleys and stairways. This very compact spatial structure makes the historic center an interesting destination for walks.

The Parrocchia S. Bartolomeo has a simple, straightforward façade and a square bell tower. Its exterior design creates a clear architectural accent in the townscape without relying on playful forms.

Inside, the Parrocchia S. Bartolomeo has three naves. The central nave is longer and has a flat ceiling, which was built after the 1980 earthquake. Architecture and local history are directly connected here.

Casa Rossa and Views over the Landscape

Casa Rossa is a historic ruin on a rocky spur at an altitude of 596 meters. It therefore represents a distinctly different form of local history from the densely built Borgo Sala: here, the elevated location defines the scene.

Casa Rossa lies on the boundary between Angri and Corbara. It was a control post as well as a customs station for goods transported from Lettere to Corbara and Angri. Its former function thus points to the historical importance of routes and the movement of goods.

The area in front of Casa Rossa offers wide-ranging views of the Chiunzi Pass, Torre Orsini, Monte di Chiunzi, Colle Calavricito, Tuoro di Stellante, Vena di S. Marco, and the summit of Cerreto. This gives you a landscape vista with numerous landmarks.

Trails and Stairways

The Sentiero del Professore leads via Trail No. 324a to Casa Rossa and Corbara. The route therefore connects the ruin with the town and provides a specific access point if you would like to combine a visit to Corbara with a hike.

The church of the Eremo di Sant’Erasmo can be reached via a long staircase that winds through small terraced gardens. The ascent is therefore itself part of the experience and leads through a small-scale environment shaped by horticulture.

Corbarino and Local Traditions

The Corbarino tomato is traditionally grown on the slopes of Corbara. It is therefore closely tied to the town’s agricultural identity and offers a culinary way to experience Corbara that extends beyond individual sights.

Traditionally, Corbarino tomatoes were stored in clusters so they could be eaten during the winter. This form of preserving food shows how the local product was connected to everyday life throughout the seasons.

As a local experience, the Corbarino Tour includes a visit to the rows planted with Corbarino tomatoes at La Tenuta Dicorbara.

“Corbara e il Corbarino” is a two-day event organized by the municipality and the Pro Loco focusing on food, wine, Tammorra, Tarantella, and the local tomato. Culinary themes come together with music and dance, giving the Corbarino a firm place in the community’s cultural life.

The Festa Patronale in honor of San Bartolomeo Apostolo is a religious and cultural festival honoring the patron saint of Corbara.
