Gioi: Castle Ruins, Trails and Rural Culture in Cilento
Accommodation in Gioi
Gioi lies in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park and combines a strong historical character with a finely cultivated landscape. The town is particularly interesting if, during a trip to Italy, you would like to combine culture, scenery and specific hiking trails. The “Il Castello” town park stands on the remains of the ancient fortress. From there, views extend across the surrounding Cilento landscape northwestward from the island of Capri to the far tip of Capo Palinuro in the southwest.
Landscape Between Parkland and Fields
The area around Gioi is primarily used to grow olives and grapevines; a large part of the land, divided into small fields, is used for horticulture. As a result, the town’s rural character is evident not only in its surroundings but also in the connection between cultivated areas and the landscape. MIG Mamei is pursuing a theoretical and experience-based research project aimed at combining art, crafts, architecture and landscape into a cultural whole.
Castle, Walls and Gates
The visible ruins of Gioi Castle date from the Norman-Staufen period of the 12th and 13th centuries and the Angevin period of the 13th and 14th centuries. Gioi’s fortification wall still has large, well-preserved sections. The polygonal course of the fortification wall is interrupted by round, truncated-cone-shaped and square towers. These date from renovations carried out between the 13th and 15th centuries. Elsewhere, La Porta dei Leoni adds its own architectural accent: the portal is made of sandstone and limestone, has two fluted stelae and two lion sculptures attached at the base.
Trails to the Bridge and Waterfalls
Gioi can also be explored along its trails. The Sentiero della Seta leads from Gioi to Stio and is suitable for hiking and trekking. Its route passes through grazing and forest areas as well as centuries-old sweet chestnut groves. The Sentiero della contemplazione begins in the town of Gioi and leads to the hamlet of Cardile; its starting point is near Località San Paolo. The medieval “Ponte degli abbracci” bridge lies along this route. The characteristic “Fiumarella” waterfalls can also be admired there.
A Place for Different Travel Interests
The combination of the castle complex, fortifications, gate, convent and hiking trails gives you several ways to experience Gioi without reducing the town to a single theme. The Convento di San Francesco was founded by the Franciscan order in the 15th century. It was built outside the walls at a passage that was essential for access to the town. In this way, the convent adds another clearly identifiable point of reference to the town’s historic character.
Fusillo di Gioi
Fusillo di Gioi is part of the local food culture. This elongated pasta is 12 to 15 centimeters long and strictly handmade. To create its shape, the dough is wrapped around an iron rod with a square cross-section. When considering a hotel or other accommodation in Gioi for your trip, you can use your own priorities as a guide: cultural interests lead to the castle, walls, convent and Porta dei Leoni, while hiking and trekking plans put the two trails at the center. This keeps your daily itinerary focused on Gioi’s specific features.
