Caggiano amid fortifications and a historic centre
The historic centre of Caggiano is characterised by a winding network of alleys, stairways and squares with numerous traces of the past. Circular engravings stand out on a church façade; in one church, side chapels with dedications commemorate influential local families.
Castle and museum
The Castello Normanno del Guiscardo and the fortifications of Caggiano date from the 9th or 10th century and served to defend the town. Part of the Castello is used for exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events. Thus, the site's former defensive function exists alongside its cultural use.
The Museo Antiquarium Civico preserves archaeological materials from the funerary monument of the Insteii.
Churches with Byzantine and medieval traces
Santa Venere, also known as the Cappella di Santa Veneranda or Chiesa di Santa Sofia, probably dates from the 11th century. The single-nave Greek-Byzantine church has a semicircular apse. It is located outside the town walls on a rocky promontory and is visible from the valley and from the Portuccia and Marvicino viewpoints.
The Chapel of San Luca was built in the 13th century. Until 1864, it had an adjoining hospital where pilgrims were treated and accommodated.
According to local tradition, the history of the church of Santa Maria dei Greci dates back to the middle of the 6th century. Its original Greek-cross floor plan is associated with the Basilian monks and Orthodox worship.
Trails along the Melandro and landscape
From Portuccia, a panoramic trail runs along the eastern edge of the historic centre and through the descending rocky terrain to the church of Santa Venere.
The Melandro River runs through the area of Caggiano and forms the physical boundary between the regions of Campania and Basilicata. The municipal area also includes the Grotte dello Zachito, north to northeast of the town and near the Melandro.
During an approximately one-hour walk through the canyon formed by the Melandro, you can discover several sulphur springs and the rock formations informally known as the Faraglioni. Festivals and local specialities
Ferragosto Caggianese can be traced back to the 1970s. It includes food festivals, games, theatre and music performances, as well as a White Night.
The “Percorso Culinario nel borgo di Caggiano” is a culinary festival in the historic centre of Caggiano. At the 32nd edition in 2024, at least five local specialities were offered along the streets in the evening.
