Eboli: Discover Churches, History and Coastal Landscapes
Accommodation in Eboli
Eboli combines sacred history, archaeology, nature trails and coastal landscapes with a regional speciality that is firmly rooted in the local identity. Those who want to get to know the town not merely as a stopover but in its various facets will find themes spanning many centuries and landscapes ranging from the inland area to the coast.
Franciscan and Sacred History
The Museo archeologico nazionale di Eboli is located in the former San Francesco monastery. The monumental San Francesco d'Assisi complex dates from 1286 and is among the earliest historically documented Franciscan establishments. In the Chiesa di San Francesco, Gothic architecture is combined with Baroque decoration.
Another important sacred site is the Church of San Pietro alli Marmi. Its Romanesque layout comprises three apsidal naves. Its crypt houses the venerated body of San Berniero. The Santuario dei Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano was built in the mid-20th century as a replacement for the older church, which is still in use, on the opposite side. This older church was too small for the pilgrims arriving from across the region.
The Castello Colonna complex is also part of Eboli's present-day character and is currently used as a correctional facility. Its current function is therefore a distinct part of the town's history and should be clearly distinguished from the sacred and museum-related themes.
Museums and Archaeological Layers of History
The MOA – Museum of Operation Avalanche presents documentation about the landing at Salerno in September 1943. In Epitaffio, a stone inscription commemorates the construction of the Via del Grano. The archaeological area of Montedoro includes extensive exposed sections of the defensive line, a settlement and a cult area.
In the San Vito al Sele archaeological area, human presence is documented from the 5th–4th century BC to the 16th century AD. Another historical trace is the Villa romana: the extensive domus from the Republican period was extensively remodelled in two successive phases.
Paths, Dunes and Coast
The Percorso dei Mulini begins at the Acquedotto dell'Acero (dell'Ermice), a few metres from the Basilica di San Pietro alli Marmi. After an initially drivable section, it becomes a path accessible only on foot. The “PINETA-MARE” nature trail is approximately 8 km long and runs within the “Foce Sele-Tanagro” nature reserve.
The coast also strongly characterises Eboli: over 8 km, the coastal strip encompasses sand, back-dunes, as well as stable and mobile dunes. This makes it possible to assign historical visits, sacred sites and nature-based activities to different interests when planning a trip, without reducing Eboli to just one facet.
A Speciality from the Municipality
The Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP is also part of the local orientation. It is produced in the municipality of Eboli from local buffalo milk in numerous artisan dairies.
