Faiano: Churches, History and Borgo Walk

Faiano combines ecclesiastical history, a distinctive spring, and a walk through the Borgo di Faiano. In the built-up town center stands the Abbazia di San Benedetto; its original construction dates back to the 11th century. The original construction in the 11th century and the designation of January 24, 2005 mark two different points in the abbey’s history. Together with other churches in the town, they create different starting points for a journey that combines culture, local history, and nature.

Churches and History in the Town

The Abbazia di San Benedetto has a specific declaration of cultural interest, referred to in Italian as “Dichiarazione di interesse culturale.” It applies pursuant to Legislative Decree 42/2004 and was granted by Ministerial Decree on January 24, 2005. The Chiesa di San Benedetto is a parish church in Faiano. As a parish church, the Chiesa di San Benedetto is part of Faiano’s ecclesiastical townscape.

The Church of Santissima Trinità is also known as Padreterno and preserves remnants of a Byzantine fresco depicting Christ Pantocrator. It was built around the year 1000 by the Lombard prince Gisulfo. The church near Faiano’s present-day parish church, which is presumably identified with Padreterno, survives only as a ruin. It is precisely this combination of a historic building, preserved fresco remnants, and a ruinous condition that makes Faiano’s sacred heritage historically multifaceted.

Historical Traces of the Strada Regia

The historic Strada Regia divided the area of Faiano into two parts between Ponte di Cagnano and the bridge over the Asa River.

The Sorgente delle sette bocche

Another side of Faiano is revealed by the Sorgente delle sette bocche on the border with the municipality of Giffoni Valle Piana. The spring water contains calcium and magnesium and is slightly sparkling. At the same time, it emerges from seven closely grouped, distinct outlets. Both the water’s properties and the arrangement of the outlets are relevant when observing the spring.

On Foot Through the Borgo di Faiano

A leisurely walk through the Borgo di Faiano is undertaken on foot. It begins and ends at the Chiesa di San Benedetto. The route thus establishes a clear starting and ending point at the parish church and focuses on the Borgo di Faiano as a continuous walking destination. For day planning, the walk remains designed as a closed route because its start and end are at the same church. The leisurely pace connects this fixed starting point with the route through the Borgo di Faiano.
