Futani: Sacred Trail, Cultural Heritage and Nature Trails
Accommodation in Futani
Futani brings together nature trails, pilgrimage and local history within a compact thematic area. The town is particularly interesting if you would like to discover the landscape not separately from its religious traditions, historic buildings and the life stories of its inhabitants.
The Sacred Trail and the Vegetation Zones
The Sentiero Sacro is at the heart of the nature experiences. The trail is approximately 13 kilometres long and leads from the historic centre of Futani over an elevation difference of 1,275 metres to an altitude of 1,705 metres. It is considered a route of religious, naturalistic and anthropological interest in the mountains accessible from Futani. Futani’s nature trails also include the Sentiero del Mulino and the Sentiero di S. Cecilia. An upgrade of the Sentiero Sacro is planned for the period from March to November.
The landscape is particularly vivid through the successive vegetation zones along the Sentiero Sacro: the trail passes through olive groves and oak forests, followed by chestnut and alder forests, and then beech forests. As a result, it is not only the length of the trail that stands out, but also the changing natural environment along the route.
Pilgrimage and Sacred History
The pilgrimage begins at the Chiesa di San Marco Evangelista. The church dates from the early years of the 18th century; inside, there is a Roman ash urn that was converted into a baptismal font. At the summit of Monte Gelbison, at an altitude of 1,705 metres, lies the Santuario della Madonna del Sacro Monte. The sanctuary was founded in the second half of the 10th century by Basilian monks.
The Cenobium dedicated to Santa Cecilia is also part of the history of the municipality of Futani. It became an abbey in 1022. Another testament to traditional mountain culture is the nevèra near the summit of Monte Lepre. The characteristic shaft, built in dry stone, was used to collect snow in winter and use it in summer. Futani itself is first documented in 1247 in a notarial deed as a hamlet belonging to the state of Cuccaro Vetere.
Menevavo in Eremiti
The hamlet of Eremiti is home to Menevavo, a multimedia open-air museum dedicated to the seaman Francesco Chirico. Visitors can follow stations and places from his life there. Graphic panels, podcasts and video clips tell his story; the content is accessible via QR codes on the installed panels. In this way, Menevavo complements the sacred and landscape themes with a biographical perspective.
An Event for Wine Enthusiasts
In Futani, the Festival del Moscato e dello Spumante del Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano e Alburni is scheduled for 23, 24 and 25 August. The event provides an additional highlight for anyone who would also like to take regional wine and festival culture into account when planning their trip.
