Aquara is surrounded by the Monti Alburni and overlooks the Valle del Calore. The town combines this distinctive landscape with cultural sites, religious festivals and trails that offer different ways to explore the area. Trails, River Landscapes and Active Experiences
There are numerous trails for trekking and horseback riding in the area around Aquara. The character of the landscape can be seen particularly clearly on the Percorso da Aquara alla Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo: the route begins at the foot of Aquara’s built-up town centre, ends near the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo in the municipality of Sant’Angelo a Fasanella and runs entirely on asphalt. It is also suitable for cycling tours.
The Percorso di San Lucido leads from the Abbazia di San Pietro to the Pietra di San Lucido in the Calore River and can also be travelled by bicycle. A route for mountain biking runs from LocalitĂ Iannace to the former sports field. Rafting is also possible on the Calore River. An equipped picnic area is located there in LocalitĂ Mainardi.
Several parking areas are available in Aquara. This makes practical orientation easier when you want to include different starting points and sections of the landscape in your daily plans.
Palaces, Monastery and Religious Heritage
The Palazzo Ducale is a ducal palace dating from the 12th century. It includes a cloister with a portico whose vaults are decorated with artistically valuable frescoes. On the upper floor there is a monumental, fan-shaped fountain made of local stone. The individual architectural elements give the palace a distinctive historical and architectural character.
The Ruderi dell’Abbazia Benedettina di S. Pietro are the remains of a Benedictine monastery that was elevated to the status of an abbey. The monk Lucido lived in the monastery complex and is regarded as the town’s patron saint. Another religious landmark can be found in the Pineta Iannace: there is a wayside shrine dedicated to the Madonna del Cantiere.
Festivals with Strong Local Connections
The traditional Carnevale di Aquara has been included in the inventory of Campania’s intangible cultural heritage, IPIC. It is a fertility rite that celebrates the agricultural production cycle and the transition from winter to spring. The Carnevale Aquarese is connected to rural culture and traditionally includes a procession through the town’s streets. On the square, the months of the year appear in a staged representation.
The festival calendar extends beyond Carnival. The Festa di S. Lucido takes place every year on 27 and 28 July in honour of Saint Lucido. The Festa di San Rocco is celebrated on 18 and 19 August in honour of Saint Roch. The Festa di Santa Maria del Piano is celebrated on 11 and 12 September in honour of Santa Maria del Piano. On 12 September, it includes a procession from the parish church to the Piano chapel and, after the service, a torchlight procession back into the town.
