Laurito lies in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park and combines a highly diverse landscape with remarkable evidence of local history. Historic Laurito and Its Churches
Around the year 1000, Laurito was a castrum, meaning a fortified settlement or castle. The Chiesa di San Filippo d’Agira is a particularly ancient sacred site. It dates back to the 13th century, and construction began in 1273. The church includes a Gothic chapel whose walls and cross vault are decorated with frescoes. The entrance to the Chiesa di San Filippo d’Agira is accessible to people with disabilities.
The Chiesa San Giovanni Battista is a church in the style of Faux Romanesque and dates from the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its present building was reconstructed in 1948 over an earlier church dating from around 1400. This example vividly illustrates the chronological depth of the local sacred architecture: a more recent building stands over the remains of a much older church site.
Among the Mill Complex, Fields and Olive Groves
The Antico Mulino complex, located on the Utria River, has housed exhibitions of agricultural tools and equipment, as well as photographs of Laurito through the years. Nearby, there is an equipped barbecue area that is freely accessible to everyone. Outside Laurito, the Chiesa della Madonna del Cielo stands among fields in the Cupone area. It has been documented since 1730 and bears the same name as the area. Around Laurito, you will therefore find both traces of the agricultural past and individual churches set in an environment shaped by fields and wooded landscapes.
Festivals and Traditional Customs
The Festa della Madonna del Cielo takes place on the second Sunday in September in the area of the same name. It includes a pilgrimage during which the faithful carry votive bundles, known as “cinte,” on their heads and then walk around the church three times. The Festa della Madonna del Carmine includes a procession in which the statue of the Madonna is taken to the mother church and returned to its original chapel the following day. The Antica Fiera della Maddalena took place near Maddalena, in an area with chestnut forests. Together, these customs show how closely religious celebrations and the landscape around Laurito are connected, without implying that their respective rituals are identical.
Routes for Different Hiking Interests
The Itinerario delle Creste follows the ridge between the plateau of Monte Fulgenti at 1,006 meters and the plateau of Tempa della Castagna at 1,360 meters. The Itinerario delle Cime, by contrast, is a challenging route for experienced hikers. It connects the summits of Monte Antilia at 1,316 meters, Tempa del Ciglio at 1,339 meters and Campanaro Giungoli at 1,448 meters, continuing to the Rotonda at 1,486 meters, the highest point in the municipal area.
