Marmorata between Sea, Rocks and History

Marmorata lies directly by the sea and is surrounded by lush lemon groves, vineyards and Mediterranean scrub. The rocky coast shapes the landscape. The combination of a seaside location, rocks and Mediterranean vegetation gives the area a distinct coastal character. In the surrounding area, lemon groves, vineyards and scrub remain visible as defining landscape elements.

Sea and Nature Near the Waterfall

Along the coast between Marmorata and Castiglione, diving is possible over rocky seabeds. During the dive, the focus is below the water’s surface. Near the Marmorata waterfall, you can also observe specimens of the noble pen shell (Pinna nobilis). Those interested in natural history can focus their attention on the underwater rocks or on the noble pen shell at the waterfall.

Towers and the History of the Mill

The Torre dello Scarpariello is a two-storey building from the viceregal period with loopholes. It is considered the best-preserved of Marmorata’s coastal watchtowers. Two storeys and the loopholes define the tower’s external appearance. As a coastal watchtower, it belongs to the historical heritage of the coastal area. The tower adds a military-historical and architectural perspective to a place whose landscape is also shaped by the sea.

A small mill in Marmorata dates back approximately to the year 1000 and used the water of a nearby stream. In the 15th century, it was converted into a paper mill and remained in operation until the 1980s. The conversion into a paper mill marks a later phase in the use of the same building. The stream belongs to the mill’s early function, while the later paper production forms part of its subsequent history of use.

Hike to the Cascata della Marmorata

The Sentiero della Cascata della Marmorata is considered a moderately difficult round trip of around two hours with an elevation gain of approximately 300 metres. With around two hours for the round trip and an elevation gain of approximately 300 metres, the hike can be planned as a separate activity for the day. The return journey is already included in the round-trip route.

The path to the Cascata della Marmorata leads from the centre of Ravello through the small village of Torello, via steps and shaded paths, to the waterfall. For planning the walk, the steps along the route should be taken into account in addition to the duration and elevation gain.

Location and Stay

Marmorata is located on the coastal road between Minori and Amalfi.

At L’Antica Cartiera, a dinner for two is offered on a private cliff a few metres from the sea. A legend from Ravello also tells that, after a storm, a saint’s relic was received in Marmorata by the Bishop of Ravello and the local population. The Bishop of Ravello and the local population receive the relic together.
