Historic Traces in Perdifumo and Vatolla

The historic center of Perdifumo includes aristocratic palaces with intricately carved stone portals. The town’s earlier history is also documented by pottery production in the 12th century: local clay was used to make kitchenware, tableware and storage vessels. This activity was also present in the following century.

Vatolla is home to the 16th-century Castello Vargas-Machucha. Its paved courtyard features a 17th-century mascaron used as a fountain. G. Battista Vico stayed at the castle; it also houses a library with historical and critical texts about the philosopher as well as on local history. The parish church of Madonna delle Grazie dates from the 11th century. Two fragments of a Roman sarcophagus from the 4th century AD are set into its façade.

The monastery complexes also bear witness to different eras. The Convento Santa Maria della Porziuncola was founded in 1635 and preserves 18th-century paintings as well as carefully crafted statues of saints. The Convento di Santa Maria della Pietà in Vatolla was established in 1619 using the older della Pietà chapel. The Cenobio di Sant’Arcangelo is considered one of the oldest monastic settlements in Cilento. In Mercato Cilento, the Convento di Santa Maria del Carmine was fortified in the first half of the 17th century to defend it against attacks by bandits.

The historical diversity also includes Vatolla’s water mill, which was built on an already existing medieval structure. The Chiesa di San Sisto Papa dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt in 1962 after being largely destroyed by a tornado in 1961. Its interior contains frescoes from the 1960s, a 17th-century holy water stoup, a high-quality 18th-century altar and a 17th-century statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. At the entrance to Camella stands an ancient public fountain bearing the coat of arms of the Altomare family and an inscription from 1536, the text of which can only be deciphered in part.

Mountain Landscape and Trails with Different Characteristics

Perdifumo is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The area features a mountainous habitat extending to Monte Stella. The watercourse Iumara is known as the Testene River. Alongside the historic buildings, this landscape shapes the experience of travelers who wish to combine culture with walks and nature.

The Passeggiata Panoramica in Perdifumo is a 1.5-kilometer walking route with four viewpoints: Piazza Europa, Piazza Regina Margherita, Santa Sofia and L’Affacciatura. At the end, L’Affacciatura offers views of the Gulf of Salerno and Castellabate. The Cammino dei monaci has a different character. The trekking route leads from the Carpinina area to the Antenne area and passes the ruins of the Sant’Arcangelo monastery; the trail is not secured.

In the wider surroundings of Perdifumo, Punta della Carpinina is home to a fortified structure made of isodomic Greek stone blocks dating from the 4th century BC. It is located approximately 1 km southwest of Perdifumo, on the border between the territories of Poseidonia and Elea, and belonged to Elea.

Religious Traditions and Events

The Pellegrinaggio Confraternite takes place on Good Friday. In Camella, the Volo dell’Angelo takes place every year during the patronal festival in honor of San Nazario. The Festa della Montagna 2025 is considered an event intended to rekindle each summer the memory of a dream that originated in the mountains.
