Sanza lies at an altitude of 600 metres in the heart of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park and belongs to this park, with 12,711 hectares of mostly forested land. The town combines the high-altitude setting of the national park with distinctive natural sites, sacred art and craft traditions. The local nature, cultural and craft attractions offer different points of focus. Nature between Forest and Limestone
As you climb from Sanza to Monte Cervato, the landscape leads from extensive oak stands, mixed coppice forests and olive groves to significant beech forests at around 1,100 to 1,200 metres above sea level. Near the summit of Monte Cervati is the Nevera, a cave where snow remains year-round. According to experts, the large downy birch forest is the southernmost in Europe. Lush limestone walls up to 100 metres high rise up; water emerges from a fissure in the wall.
Sacred Art and Living Craft Traditions
In the 18th century, Sanza was enriched with palatial houses, portals and noble chapels. The Cappella di San Vito contains a substantial late Baroque altar made of Padula stone, created by Andrea Carrara in 1720. The same chapel houses a wooden statue of the church’s patron saint, created by Sabino Peluso in 1776. The Cappella della Madonna della Neve contains a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, probably created in the Naples area during the second half of the 19th century. Sanza has a longstanding craft tradition in working with wood, iron and stone, which is continued by master craftsmen. A craftsman from Sanza still makes the Ciaramella to order in various forms and from different types of wood.
Routes and Fixed Dates
The Via Silente includes an e-bike tour from Sanza to Casaletto Spartano. The Santuario Mariano sul Cervato opens every year from June to October. The novena takes place every year from 26 July to 5 August. These fixed time periods are relevant to your planning if you wish to specifically include the Santuario and the novena in your trip.
Getting There and Accessibility
From the Buonabitacolo exit on the E45, the route leads via Buonabitacolo and then along the SS517var towards Piazza XXIV Maggio and on to Sanza. The entrance to the Chiesa parrocchiale dell’Assunta has steps that do not allow people with disabilities to enter independently. The entrance to the Cappella della Madonna della Neve also has steps, making access impossible for people with disabilities.
