Historic Traces in the Town Center

The origins of Celle di Bulgheria are probably traced back to around AD 700. At that time, Bulgarian settlers settled on the foothills of Monte Bulgheria and founded villages. One of these villages became the seat of a laura with cells for Italo-Greek monks, giving rise to the name “Celle.” The town’s history is therefore closely connected with the mountain and the early settlements on its slopes.

In the historic town center stands the Casa del Canonico Antonio Maria De Luca, which dates from the late 18th century and overlooks the Piazzetta Crocevia. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Neve was built in 1715 over an existing 17th-century chapel. In Poderia, a hamlet of Celle di Bulgheria, there is also the Santuario di Santa Sofia, a church sanctuary in Poderia, Celle di Bulgheria.

Hiking on Monte Bulgheria

The Santuario di Santa Sofia is considered the starting point for the hike up Monte Bulgheria. It is located in Località Pantrato, in the Poderia hamlet of the municipality of Celle di Bulgheria. The Valle-Cupa trail passes through holm oak forest and Mediterranean maquis. Along the way, it crosses the Altipiano trail, which leads to the summit of Monte Bulgheria.

The Valle-Cupa trail offers views along the course of the Fiume Mingardo as far as its confluence with the Torrente Serrapotamo. The hike up Monte Bulgheria also includes slippery sections of trail and short exposed passages. Thus, varied landscape impressions and specific terrain sections are equally part of this route. The Landscape Dimension of the Protected Area

The Monte Bulgheria Site of Community Importance covers 2,400 hectares. The protected Monte Bulgheria area also extends across the territory of Celle di Bulgheria. Together with the Fiume Mingardo, the Torrente Serrapotamo, and the trails through woodland and maquis, this creates a landscape that is particularly revealed through movement and changing elevations.

Getting to the Starting Point

Access to the hiking route is via the Cilentana expressway, the SS 18 variant. Take the Celle di Bulgheria exit, turn left at the exit, and follow the provincial road to Poderia. From there, the route passes through the town center and continues to the Chiesa di Santa Sofia. There is a fountain at the starting point of the hike where drinking water can be replenished.
