Prignano Cilento: History, Nature and Fig Culture
Accommodation in Prignano Cilento
Prignano Cilento combines history, landscapes and local food culture. The town brings together religious and defensive buildings with the Alento area and a distinctive form of fig processing.
Churches and Defensive Tower
The mother church of Prignano Cilento is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari and was built before the 13th century. Its dedication to Saint Nicholas of Bari and its construction before the 13th century provide two precise historical reference points. The mother church is also associated with the staged performance “L'Opera dei Turchi”. It is performed on Easter Monday in the square in front of the mother church. For planning the timing of a cultural stay, Easter Monday is therefore the specified reference date for this performance. Alongside the historic church building, there is thus a specific date in the life of the town.
The chapel is the surviving part of a former monastery of the Augustinian Fathers, which was dissolved in 1652. The building is privately owned and is not open to visitors. The chapel therefore points to an earlier monastic use without representing the complete monastery as it has been preserved. Torre Volpe provides a different architectural accent. It is one of the few defensive structures in Cilento to have survived almost completely intact and is believed to date from the 11th century. In the case of the chapel, the former monastic history is the focus, while the tower emphasizes its defensive purpose and its presumed origins in the 11th century.
Protected Landscape along the Alento
The Oasi del Fiume Alento is a protected area for natural areas, habitats and forest types in the Alento River basin. The Oasi Fiume Alento is located in Località Piano della Rocca in Prignano Cilento (SA). The Alento Dam, completed in 1994, is situated within the oasis. The dam is therefore geographically part of the protected area and not of a separate surrounding area. Within the same Alento basin, natural habitats and a precisely dated structure exist side by side.
Figs and Local Tradition
Prignano Cilento lies entirely within the DOP production area of “Fico Bianco del Cilento”. In the rural communities of Cilento, particularly in Prignano Cilento, a traditional technique developed in which figs are peeled before being dried. The peeled fruits are called “monnati” in the local dialect. The local term therefore refers to the fruit after peeling and before drying. This term preserves both the work step and the linguistic connection to Cilento. The fig tradition is thus linked to the DOP area and to the rural communities of Cilento.
Archaeology in the Surrounding Area
The archaeological site of Tempa di Feo-S. Giuliano-Melito is located in the surrounding area of Prignano Cilento. It therefore constitutes an independent archaeological point of reference outside the immediate events and attractions of the town. Its geographical status distinguishes it from the historic buildings described in the town; both areas belong to different parts of the history of the town and its surroundings.
