Tortorella overlooks the valleys and gorges of the Rio Bussentino and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The Palazzo Marchesale bears witness to the Carafa della Stadera family's long rule over Tortorella, from the 17th century until 1810. The palazzo includes a stone-paved courtyard with a centuries-old grapevine, a preserved olive-wood press and a well with a Latin inscription. The Chiesa Madre Parrocchiale Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 11th century. The Chiesa di San Vito Martire was built between the 17th and 18th centuries outside the town center.

The MUN – Museo dell'Uomo e della Natura is a multifunctional museum in Tortorella. It hosts exhibitions and events on science, nature, landscapes, technology, theater, music and poetry. The MUN was created by transforming a disused quarry into an amphitheater with panoramic views. In doing so, it draws on the tradition of the theaters of Magna Graecia in a contemporary way. Historical buildings, local knowledge and a cultural venue connected to the landscape therefore stand side by side in the town.

Forest Trails, Gorges and Varied Hiking Themes

For planning your excursions, Tortorella offers several trails with different characteristics. The Sentiero Del Monte Cocuzzo is a circular trail through a beech forest to the 1,300-meter-high summit of Monte Cocuzzo. The Sentiero del Mulino leads through the rocky gorge formed by the Torrente Bussentino to the ruins of the 12th-century Mulino di S. Vito, located more than 300 meters below. The Sentiero Del Farneto crosses the entire Farneto forest over a length of 3.75 kilometers. At Ponte Santa Caterina, the Rupazzi trail provides access to the town center of Tortorella.

Important for your planning: The Anello del Little Canyon trail is currently inaccessible due to maintenance work. The other trails described focus on different highlights – from the beech forest and summit to the gorge and mill ruins, as well as the Farneto forest and access to the town center. Goshawks, kestrels and red kites breed on Monte Zepparra. The landscape can therefore also be viewed from the perspective of its birdlife.

Crafts and Regional Cuisine

In Tortorella, craft traditions involving the processing of iron, stone and broom are deeply rooted; the inhabitants are considered experts in these fields. A culinary specialty is the dish Frascatola, prepared with potatoes and broccoli greens. On August 14, the Sagra della Ciuparedda features a food festival on the calendar. The centerpiece is a rustic soup rooted in the peasant cuisine of Cilento.
