Ceramic Culture and Sacred Sites
The MCC Museo della Ceramica Contemporanea Punzi is housed in the historic Palazzo Punzi at Corso Umberto I, 24. The exhibition comprises more than sixty works in five exhibition rooms and provides a clear cultural focus for your stay.
The Museo Provinciale della Ceramica is located in the Villa Guariglia complex. The Torretta Belvedere was the first part of this museum and was inaugurated on May 9, 1981. Villa Guariglia also houses ceramic panels by Renato Rossi.
The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista has a dome clad in majolica. The Arciconfraternita dell’Annunziata e del Rosario has a façade decorated with painted ceramics. In Marina di Vietri sul Mare, the Oratorio dell’Immacolata Concezione is part of the Santa Maria di Porto Salvo architectural complex.
Churches and Historic Traces
The Church of Santa Margherita in Albori already existed in 1500, became a parish church in 1610, and has three naves. The Church of Sant’Antonio in Marina dates from 1607 and has one nave and six side chapels.
The Church of Santa Maria dell’Arco in Raito was built in 1743 and received a majolica floor in 1875. The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Raito was built between 1538 and 1540. Its foundation is connected with the discovery of a fresco depicting the nursing Virgin Mary with her son.
The Torre Vito Bianchi was built in 1564 as one of the watchtowers protecting the fishing village of Vietri sul Mare. The Terme della Bagnara date from the 1st century BC; several rooms have been preserved near the rock face, including a round room with niches and two entrance rooms. The Festa dei Ceramisti is also known as Sant’Antuono and is associated with January 17 in Vietri sul Mare.
Coast, Terraces and Trails
The coast of Marina di Vietri has fine golden sand and a shallow, gently sloping seabed. Spiaggia di Cancelluzzo can only be reached from the sea. These two coastal features make it clear that the beaches differ in terms of their local accessibility.
The agricultural landscape of Vietri sul Mare includes vineyards, citrus groves, and characteristic terraces. The park of Villa Guariglia uses the local terracing technique and is an example of Mediterranean maquis.
Excursions and Practical Orientation
The Sentiero dei Borghi Vietresi connects the waterfront promenade of Marina di Vietri with the hill districts of Albori and Dragonea. The CAI Route 303a begins in Albori. A path from the center of Vietri leads to the summit of Monte San Liberatore; near the summit is the ancient Cristo Re Liberatore sanctuary, which dates from the 8th century.
During a Vietri ceramics workshop, participants can decorate or model ceramics using typical Vietri techniques. Villa Comunale has an amphitheater, panoramic views, and colorful design.
Vietri sul Mare has a railway station with connections to Salerno and Cava de’ Tirreni. When choosing a hotel in Vietri sul Mare, the station can serve as an objective point of orientation if these connections are relevant to your travel plans.
