San Nicolò between Architecture and Local History
In San Nicolò, the parish church, several villas and the Abazié represent different architectural and historical themes. This picture is complemented by the Sentiero Primaro and the Percorso Primaro.
San Nicolò is located on the left bank of the Po di Primaro. The settlement was mentioned as a river port in the statutes of Ferrara from 1287. The river is therefore part of both the landscape and the town’s recorded history.

The Parish Church of San Nicolò
The present-day parish church of San Nicolò dates from 1788. Inside, there is a 16th-century high altar from the Chiesa della Consolazione in Ferrara, where it was installed in 1858. The Church of San Nicolò is attributed to the architect Antonio Foschini, who came from Ferrara.
Villas and Notable Buildings
Villa Pasi is located at the entrance to San Nicolò. The building has two side wings, decorative embellishments and a large park. Villa Zanardi is a large palace with a courtyard reached via an imposing grand staircase.
The Abazié and the Early Settlement Cores
The Abazié is a massive, castle-like building with two towers. Originally, it was a Benedictine abbey dating back to 1474. The Abazié was also one of the first settlement cores of the former town of San Nicolò.

For an artistic tour of San Nicolò, the local buildings, villas and, in particular, the church dedicated to the patron saint San Nicola serve as thematic points of reference. The combination of the religious building, historic villas and the Abazié takes visitors through different periods and architectural types found in the town.
Trails along the Primaro
The Sentiero Primaro “Daniele Zagani” reaches an equipped rest area at the beginning of San Nicolò. Near San Nicolò, the trail follows Via Primaro along the canal of the same name for over 1 km on asphalt. Along the Primaro embankment towards Ospital Monacale, the Sentiero Primaro also includes a 3 km section on an unpaved surface.
Between San Nicolò and Argenta, the nature trail “Primaro” follows a wooded section of the abandoned old embankment of the Po di Primaro. This section differs from the paved section on Via Primaro and the unpaved path along the embankment towards Ospital Monacale.
The Percorso Primaro is an approximately 80 km long cycling and walking route that connects Ferrara with the sea and runs mainly along the Reno River. The Reno River is also known as the Po (morto) di Primaro. Depending on the section, the route is intended exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists or is shared with motor vehicles.
Events in the Town Centre
The centre of San Nicolò hosts events and public gatherings. From 26 to 28 June 2026, the Pro Loco di San Nicolò organised SanPataFest 2026. The festival included live music and food. There was also a food stall serving potato-based dishes, as well as a bar.
