Cavezzo: History, Markets and Emilian Delicacies
Accommodation in Cavezzo
Cavezzo combines ecclesiastical history with markets, Emilian festival culture, regional cuisine and an observatory for public viewing. Different facets emerge in the town centre and its districts: historic religious buildings, recurring market dates, food festivals, religious traditions and a telescope for public observation. The EuroVelo 7 also runs nearby along the Secchia river embankment.

Historical traces in Cavezzo and Disvetro
The reconstructed Chiesa parrocchiale di S. Egidio Abate was inaugurated on 2 June 2019. Its history dates back to an old oratory from the late 12th century on the Isola di Sant’Egidio, which roughly corresponds to the present-day centre of Cavezzo. The oldest significant settlement in the Cavezzo area was Casare; it was dependent on Nonantola Abbey and stood where the Motta district is located today. In Disvetro, the bell tower of the Chiesa parrocchiale di S. Giovanni Battista was largely rebuilt in 1923 by the architect Giacomo Masi.
Markets and local cultural life
The “La Biblio” library offers book lending and use, audiovisual material lending, Nati per Leggere programmes and cultural activities. The weekly routine includes a market in the town centre: it takes place on Wednesdays, except public holidays, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Cavezzo. On the third Sunday of every month, Piazza Fratelli Cervi hosts an arts and hobbies market.
Emilian cuisine and festivals
Local cuisine is particularly evident in the festivals: the Festa della Tagliatella focuses on tagliatelle, traditional dishes and vegetarian specialities. In 2025, it was scheduled to take place at Villa Giardino in Cavezzo as its 21st edition; concerts, performances and activities for the whole family were planned every evening. The Sagra di San Giovanni takes place in Disvetro, at Via di Mezzo 2, with four evenings of music, food and socialising, and is aimed at residents and visitors of all ages. Traditional Emilian dishes, pasta dishes, grilled food, side dishes and typical desserts are served.
Districts, traditions and regional specialities
The Sagra di Motta in the Motta district also combines food and social events with religious celebrations, including the rosary, Eucharistic adoration and, on Wednesday 5 August, a holy mass and a procession accompanied by a marching band. During the Sundays of Carnival, allegorical floats and costumed figures move through the centre of Cavezzo. Cavezzo is also part of the exclusive production and packaging area for Salame di San Felice in the province of Modena.
Astronomy in Cavezzo
Cavezzo also has an astronomical observatory: the “Geminiano Montanari” Astronomical Observatory has a main telescope dedicated to public observation. It is a Newton-Cassegrain reflector with a mirror diameter of 400 mm and a focal length of 2210 mm; it is housed in a dome with a diameter of 4.5 m.
