Romanesque Traces and the Rocca
The Pieve di Rubbiano preserves almost intact monumental forms from the 11th and 12th centuries in a largely undisturbed architectural and landscape setting. The present-day building was constructed in the 12th century. It preserves Romanesque architectural decoration as well as traces of frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Rocca di Montefiorino stands on a rocky spur at an altitude of 797 metres and overlooks the valleys of the Dolo and Dragone torrents. The original tower, which is still preserved, is believed to date back to the 12th century, approximately to the year 1170. The Rocca houses the Museo della Repubblica Partigiana. It documents the history of the Repubblica di Montefiorino from 18 June to 2 August 1944 through contemporary artefacts, the voices of eyewitnesses and projections. This makes the site a place where medieval architectural fabric meets a clearly defined episode of contemporary history.
Historic Routes and Trails
The Via Bibulca is an ancient Roman route that began at the confluence of the Dolo and Dragone torrents and led to the Passo delle Radici. Some sections can still be walked today in the municipalities of Montefiorino and Frassinoro. Montefiorino also has historic and nature trails for trekking, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.
The Surrounding Landscape
Monte Santa Giulia, classified as a mountain, is located in the surroundings of Montefiorino. Monte Modino, also classified as a peak, is likewise located in the surroundings of Montefiorino. Both landscape features complement the view from the Rocca with additional names and forms of regional orientation if you would like to consider the area not only from a cultural perspective but also from a landscape perspective.
Truffle Culture and Visitor Information
The Parco del Tartufo opened in 2007 and covers more than 25 hectares, most of which is made up of oak forests. The park includes a visitor centre where tourist information is provided. Every year, Montefiorino hosts the Mostra Mercato del Tartufo Modenese, an event that explores the world of truffles in depth. When planning your days, this allows you to choose between different focuses, including historic buildings, trails, landscapes and culinary culture.
