History, Museums and Architecture
Castello di Gorizia dates back to the 11th century and was later expanded as the power of its counts grew. It was bombarded during the First World War; reconstruction took place between 1922 and 1937. For visitors, the Castello offers video guides, holograms, 3D visors and a multimedia presentation.
The Museo della Grande Guerra displays photographic documents, weapons, medals and other evidence of life in the trenches in Gorizia during the First World War. The museum also includes a full-scale reconstruction of a trench that visitors can walk through. In addition to the exhibits, this gives an examination of this period of history a spatial dimension.
Palazzo Coronini Cronberg is a historic residence dating from the late 16th century. Its museum tour leads through 15 rooms, including the room where Charles X of Bourbon, the last king of France, died in 1836. The Synagogue of Gorizia is located in the area of the former Jewish ghetto. Since 1998, it has housed the Museo della Gerusalemme sull'Isonzo e della comunità ebraica goriziana.
The Chiesa di S. Ignazio is also one of the city's prominent historic buildings: it dates from 1654 and was built by Jesuit priests. The façade was designed by Cristoforo Tausch. The Museo della Moda e delle Arti Applicate offers a different cultural focus with a collection of accessories and garments from the 18th to the 20th century.
Walks and Nature
The Parco urbano del Castello represents a quieter side of Gorizia. It has an unpaved footpath and includes a large recreational area with benches, tables and a fountain. Parco di Piuma Isonzo also offers an educational nature trail and enables pleasant stays in direct contact with nature. This makes it possible to combine museum visits and walks through green spaces into a varied day plan.
Getting Around Gorizia
Line 1 is the main line of Gorizia's urban bus network and crosses the city. Gorizia also has the Gorizia Centrale railway station. When planning your trip, these two transport hubs can play a practical role if you would like to coordinate cultural destinations, walks and nature experiences.
