Staranzano combines nature observation at the Isonzo estuary with routes through landscapes and wetlands, as well as cultural history. Highlights include birds and wetlands, the history of land reclamation, the “In bici attraverso la campagna” cycling route and ancient traces at the Villa della liberta Peticia. At the Isonzo estuary and on Isola della Cona, the focus is on nature observation; the cycling tour, by contrast, starts in the center of Staranzano.

Nature at the Isonzo Estuary
The nature reserve at the Isonzo estuary covers 2,338 hectares, including 1,154 hectares of marine area. There are numerous sheltered observation points and two large observation stations for birdwatching. The marine area belongs to the same protected area as the observation points and stations.
Isola della Cona with Observation Points and a Circular Trail
At the Isola della Cona visitor center, visitors can examine organisms from the protected area through the windows of water tanks and with microscopes. The visitor center expands nature observation to include the study of organisms. On Isola della Cona, the United World Trail is a 10 km circular route. The circular layout and specified length can be considered together for a day section; with this route format, a separate return route is not necessary. Observation at the center and the circular trail represent two different ways of experiencing Isola della Cona.
Cycling through Staranzano and the Wetland
A second route perspective is offered by “In bici attraverso la campagna.” The route begins in the center of Staranzano, passes through the Risorgive di Schiavetti Brancolo wetland area and then continues back to the center of Staranzano. The Risorgive di Schiavetti wetland covers 63.88 hectares and is located in the municipalities of Monfalcone and Staranzano. The cycling tour’s connection to the area thus remains anchored in the center of Staranzano and the Risorgive di Schiavetti Brancolo wetland area.
Experience Land Reclamation Firsthand
The Museo Digitale della Bonifica is located at the Idrovora Sacchetti in Staranzano. It deals with the history and significance of land reclamation in the lower Isonzo plain. Interactive touchscreens and virtual reality are used there to explore wetlands and the changes brought about by water-management measures. The history of land reclamation and the changes to the wetlands remain focused on the lower Isonzo plain.
Ancient Traces and Historical Depth
The Villa della liberta Peticia was a residential and production estate in an area administered by Aquileia in antiquity. In the third room, the villa has a black-and-white mosaic with a central checkerboard pattern, dated to the first half of the 1st century AD. The Museo Carsico, Geologico e Paleontologico is located in the vicinity of Staranzano. In Staranzano, visitors interested in culture encounter both the history of land reclamation at the Idrovora Sacchetti and the ancient traces of the Villa della liberta Peticia.
