Acuto among the Borgo, Vineyards and Landscape

Acuto can be discovered from several perspectives when planning your trip. In the historic borgo, you can freely explore seven stone and religious sites on foot. These include the old Church of Santa Maria Maddalena amid the vineyards of Acuto, Laghetto Volubro a short distance from Acuto, and a nature trail accessible from Acuto via the road to Volubro.

Churches and Stone Sites on Foot

The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta has an interior richly decorated with Baroque elements and windows made of polychrome glass. The original building dates from the late 11th century. The old Church of Santa Maria Maddalena stands amid the vineyards of Acuto and adds a different, rural accent. Together with the other stone and religious sites in the historic borgo, it forms a circuit that you can explore on foot and without following a fixed route.

Nature at Volubro

Laghetto Volubro is a karst lake a short distance from Acuto and was formed in a sinkhole. The Sentiero Natura Cesa Rotonda is accessible from Acuto via the road to Volubro. It is 1,800 metres long, has an elevation difference of 62 metres and offers a view of the Sacco Valley.

Olive Oil, Wine and a Former Railway Line

High-quality olive oil and the renowned Cesanese de Piglio wine are produced in the Acuto area. Those who include regional products in their travel plans will find two specific culinary connections here. Cycling also offers its own landscape perspective: the Paliano–Fiuggi cycle path follows the route of a former railway and runs through the Acuto countryside. The railway line’s former function remains part of its history.

Historic Sites and Events

The Church of San Sebastiano in Acuto was built in 1200 outside the town centre to accommodate pilgrims and travellers during quarantines caused by plague and cholera epidemics. In October, Acuto hosts the event „Vendemmia di una volta“. It includes a procession in traditional dress from the Church of San Sebastiano to the Cantina del Museo Etnografico Diffuso.

La Trita in Acuto is a reenactment of the old custom of harvesting and threshing grain. Saltaranta is Acuto’s „Notte Bianca“, held in mid-August and featuring popular, folk and ethnic music. Acuto Jazz is an event dedicated to figures in jazz music that has been held for three decades. These different dates give culture in Acuto several forms of expression – from agricultural customs and traditional clothing to music.
