In 1595, the complex consisting of the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie and the Convento di Sant'Angelo in Fortunula was founded in Villa Santa Lucia. The town's history is also visible in the Piumarola district: the remains of its castle are preserved there, and archaeological remains from the Roman period have also survived. The historical perspective therefore extends from a religiously shaped complex back to the Roman past.
Some finds from the non-systematic excavations in the area, particularly in Piumarola, have been incorporated into the walls of public and private buildings and remain visible. The craft of the Strammaro uses dried stramma to make baskets, mats and chairs. The “tabula nundinalis,” kept in the Museo di Napoli, is associated with Piumarola as an important craft and commercial centre. It lists the holidays on which the Romans held public markets and fairs for the exchange of goods.
Historic Routes and Excursions
The routes of remembrance tourism also give the surrounding area a historical focus. They climb up the mountain, lead around the Castello di Sant'Angelo da Fortunula and extend as far as the Abbey of Montecassino.
