Pastena combines an impressive cave landscape with a historic village center and a lively festival culture. Nature, rural traditions and an annual event give the town several distinct facets that you can take into account when planning your trip.
The Grotte di Pastena and its water landscape
The Grotte di Pastena is located in the Parco Naturale Regionale Monti Ausoni e Lago di Fondi. It comprises a lower active section and an upper fossilized section of the cave. The chambers contain stalactites, stalagmites and columns, as well as lakes and seasonal waterfalls. The Sala del Lago blu is particularly striking: there, a waterfall approximately 10 meters high, whose flow depends on rainfall, plunges into a small lake 5 meters deep. The lake is fed by the Fosso Mastro and by small springs at the bottom.
The Grotte di Pastena formed during the Mesozoic Era, approximately 80 to 50 million years ago, through the continuous erosion caused by water. This explains the active course inside the cave: the 2,200-meter section of the speleological tour follows the underground course of the stream, which enters the cave in the Pastena area under the name Fosso Mastro and emerges again in the Falvaterra area under the name Rio Obaco. Along its course, it takes in water from numerous underground springs that flow year-round.
Village Culture and Rural Heritage
The historic center of Pastena is characterized by narrow, paved lanes and stone houses. It preserves the traditional atmosphere and authenticity of an old village. The Museo dell’Arte Contadina e dell’Ulivo offers another way to experience the local culture. It comprises 13 rooms presenting aspects of rural life in the area, including a room dedicated to olive oil production, a crafts room, a bedroom and a room for grain processing.
Orientation and Access
From the “Ceprano” exit of the A1 Autostrada del Sole Rome–Naples, the route follows Via Ristretto southeast to the SP151 toward Pastena; this section is 6 kilometers long. Access to the Grotte di Pastena is exclusively by guided tour. Groups comprise no more than 12 people. If there are several family groups or people to whom distancing rules do not apply, groups of up to 20 people are possible.
The Grotte di Pastena was explored in 1926 by Baron Carlo Franchetti and other speleologists. It was opened to tourists as early as 1927. When planning your trip, Pastena can therefore be viewed from various perspectives: as a place for a deeper encounter with water and rock, as a village with visible traces of its rural heritage, or as a destination centered around a fixed date in June.
The Cherry Festival in June
The Cherry Festival takes place on the first Sunday in June and was established in 1936. The festival includes floats designed by Pastena’s districts. If you plan your trip around this date, the festival complements the natural and cultural themes of the cave, village center and museum with a locally distinctive day of festivities.
